The exact model or model family?
It's an Asus Zenbook 14 UX433FA (there's a new model on the way, the FN, but I don't think anyone is selling it yet and I expect it to be more expensive). The only place with a bricks and mortar presence that I can find that sells it is JL, a number of sellers on Amazon have it as do AO and ebuyer, but I'd face the same concern ordering from any of them (and I don't believe any of them offer the 3 year warranty that JL do if I decided to keep it).
Edit: Just to be absolutely clear, I don't care what configuration I see (options seem to be limited to i5/i7 and 256/512GB SSD), but the model has some specific features that others don't have so seeing any other model wouldn't help.0 -

If your £800 laptop arrived with had the packing missing and finger marks all over you simply would not pay for it, so you shouldn't expect Lewis to pick up these pieces just because you want to try before you buy
Last time I looked this was the Consumer Rights Board, not Discussion Time. Agrinnall is a long time contributor and is, quite reasonably, asking a relevant question. He isn't asking to do anything beyond what legislation allows him to do - where you get that he is going to return the laptop with missing packaging or with finger marks all over it is beyond me. If John Lewis don't like the rights that legislation offers to online customers then they can choose not to offer laptops for sale via their online platform. The fact that they do means that they are prepared to accept that some laptops will be returned - but they are allowed to reduce a refund if the customer's handling is excessive and diminishes the resale value of the product. Agrinnall is not proposing to do anything which comes close to this.0 -

Thank you, that is the sort of answer I was hoping to see rather than the irrelevant ones that some people have decided to post. JL's initial response to my query does seem hopeful but was a little vague, so I have asked them to be clearer.0 -
JL have said (and I quote):
"...we do not recommend this to all our customer. However, since you have mention you will not be (sic) power the item up, we will be more than happy to assist you if you are going to return the item with the full packaging".
Which is good. Having said that, some more research today has convinced me that the advantages this machine has are actually outweighed by the advantages of the other one that was still on my short list, which I have tried out already, so it's very likely that I will order that one and never need to invoke the returns policy (unless it's faulty of course).0 -

Glad you got a positive result.
However it does not really clarify their return policy does it?
It reads like they are making an exception for you as you have asked.0 -

Yes, it's a bit strange to have customer-specific policies, when all this is done and dusted I may ask them to review their reponse and whether it fully complies with the relevant laws.
Annoyingly, the other laptop (HP Envy 13) that I had decided to order is now out of stock, they do have more coming in but it may take 10 days, and there's no guarantee that the price won't go up in that time. So I now have to think about whether in the meantime I order the Asus and have a look at it just in case it is the better of the two in the flesh.0 -

Can you not get this direct from HP?
Sometimes there are discount codes and cashback knocking around as well?0 -

You probably can, but then you miss out on JL's 3 year warranty, so even if a discount is possible it'll be wiped out by buying extra cover from HP.
Anyway, I have now ordered the Asus computer from JL which I should be able to pick up from Waitrose this afternoon, if it's suitable I'll keep it, if not I'll be testing out their returns policy.0 -
I now have the computer in my (not) sticky mitts, and it seems to be a very nice machine, with a very small footprint compared to my work laptop with the same size screen. It's on charge just now so I'll be spending the evening setting it up. The only issue is that an accessory that JL say it comes with was missing, but I've asked them to send it to me and it's not something that I'm likely to use very often anyway (and I also have one of my own if necessary).0
