    I know, but as the OP's query is not about a new application, I didn't see any point in mentioning it, hence me only referring to their requirements for the renewal process.
    Even with a new application, the photograph still needs to be countersigned by someone known to the applicant, something that the check and send process doesn't do.

    Not totally correct.
    They don't have to be a personal friend (although they can be).
    All that is required is that they know you well and recognise you from a photograph.

    If you have a medical problem that requires you visiting your GP on a fairly regular basis then that GP might know you well even though you might not class each other as personal friends.
