I think every master bedroom should have a wired phone, for fire, often people seem to just get trapped upstairs or in the bedrooms, and you may be able to jump out a window but you may need help getting others out the house, worse case call the neighbours to bring a ladder!

Even more the case out in the country where response time is going to be slower and next door may be a 5min run in the pitch dark.

Hi, said I'd update. We find the seller is taking their number after all, therefore problem solved, so I'm afraid it's not a lot of help to anyone in the same position.

Sorting out the connection was a bit laborious, but once we got the right phone number for the department at BT who could sort it out (which we were given on a online application when the website application wouldn't proceed any further) we got through to someone who dealt with it. Had I not happened by a sheer fluke to know what the house had once been called years ago, though, we would have had some trouble, as it was registered under that name, and wasn't registered by its house number (current address) or name when first built......:o
