Please can someone recommend me any good structural engineer in the High Wycombe (Bucks area)
One builder I called today quoted me £1200 for the structural engineer.
Of course he did. £600 to the SE for doing it properly and £600 in his own pocket for the hassle of having to do the job properly!:rotfl:Those who risk nothing, Do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothingMFW #63 £0/£5000 -

As Doozergirl has already offered, find the structural engineer first and then let them give you recommendations towards builders, even the DS will know of decent builders who don't cut corners and do a good job
As I said, our structural engineer charged us just £1000 -
Could you speak to someone from building control at the council? They may be able to guide you towards a suitable local engineer (probably not supposed to recommend anyone...). Councils do vary, but mine was great when I did a similar stuctural alteration 2 years ago. One of the BC staff went through the types of submissions, schedule of visits and what the inspector would be looking for. I went to the council offices and asked if anyone was free to discuss an application (and someone was). You may be better phoning or emailing to arrange a meeting.0

I am already asked them and they replied as followsThank you for the below email.
The building control application can be filled out by either, but needs to have your details as the applicant.
The application form can be found attached.
The Council can not recommend anyone.

I had something similar to this earlier this year. Instructed my own SE. Use this website https://www.istructe.org/find-an-engineer/
SE charged me £300 for site visit and sent me a PDF with the full calcs. The council may want to see this but in my case they said they didn’t need to as the SE I chose is one they work with day in day out. I applied to building control myself. I can’t remember the exact fee but it was around £150. Council were very helpful. Gave my builder the PDF. He did have a few queries so he phoned my SE my SE was happy to help. During the work my builder contacted building control to arrange the site visits. As long as they are phoned before 10am they turn up that day. Building control were happy with the work and it was all signed off and I received my certificate.
I had some builders who insisted on their own SE as they claimed the council are useless at turning up if you phone which was not the case. I wanted the SE to be independent hence using my own. The builders who say you don’t need an SE for removing a load bearing wall are talking complete rubbish and would avoid. Please don’t skimp on this. It’s the structure of your house.0 -
I found one SE and he said that he will charge me £275+ Vat = £330.00 and will do the paper work for me for uilding control application. I told him the address of the property and then asked him when he can do the site visit.
He said he got the floor plan from right move and just need the marking on it for the wall that need removal rest he will do the he will do the calculation for the beam and will send me a PDF file.
Does it seems right? Has anyone expereiced this before?0 -

I would want a site visit for my money, he's basically just going to estimate the load and maybe over engineer it just in case, You or the builder could have done that your selves.
Different matter if he had the original house plans, but he's just using the EA floor plan that could be off and photos.0 -
I always want them on site because there's always a chance that there's something else out of the ordinary going on. That's their chance to spot it.
What is it with SEs! So many want to charge the earth and do nothing for it. Ours is an absolute godsend!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
