It is a Bank holiday across the UK+ NI on Monday. Those involved in financial transactions may have pulled the plug earlier than usual on Friday and gone home for a long weekend.

You would be wise to contact the bank and ask them to check and send the money back as soon as possible rather than just waiting for it to bounce back

The bank (quite rightly IMO) will not deal with you at all - the sender must chase this up.
If the solicitor messed this up then they should sort it out.
If the OP did mess up the account number then they will have to wait.

Next working day IME if the ac number doesn't exist, but may vary by bank.

You better hope it doesn't exist...

    Good luck.
  • Thanks. it was definitely an invalid sort code account number combination I've been told so fingers crossed !

Usually takes 4 or 5 days to bounce back
  • Perhaps there's an argument that cheques are a safer way of transferring large amounts of money for things like house sale proceeds.

An example of why you should avoid a completion on a Friday, particularly one before a bank holiday.

It sounds like you have had helpful advice on your problem, just a thought that has come into my head, it was the solicitors that said the number was wrong and not via an email? thinking about the interception scams that are going around where customers have lost money when sending money.

Was you sending the money or the solicitors? who inputted the numbers as if it was the solicitors sending the money and you can see where the numbers were transposed you should get the solicitors to sort it out and you reimburse when money is sent back.

In relation to the question about how long it takes it could take up to 7 days, but depends on if it is send back or reversed/bounced due to incorrect details.

Hopefully will be sorted out now the BH weekend is over.

  • Hi
The solicitors were sending the money to me. I spoke to the person involved this morning and she admitted she looked at the form on the Thursday but wasn't sure of one of the numbers because of my handwriting so she asked a colleague what it looked like and they effectively took a punt. She did say she wished she had phoned me up to check - do you think that's enough for me to claim back the additional removal fees from having to send the van back and have all my things rederlivered and also the additional 5 days of cost for having to put my cats in a cattery while it was sorted out ?

Ah - while I agree that phoning to check would have been sensible, if the initial issue was your handwriting then I think you'd struggle to pin all the liability on them. No harm in asking them to reflect on their role in this to consider if some sort of gesture would be appropriate though....
