Three year old laptop needs a new battery?
I'm still using the same battery on eight and nine year old laptops. Only have lost around thirty minutes of charge time since then.

I'm getting about 2-3 years out of mine. The problem is not that I can't get an hour or two out of them, it's that the computer crashes out before the level indicator recognises that the battery's getting low.

My son did use this a lot while at college so was always on charge, it loses charge quickly and dies before it’s actually run out

...is that because you haven’t had to buy any in the last 8 or 9 years?:D

That’s a hell of a lifespan for Li-Ion batteries running laptops,...they don’t make them like that anymore that’s for sure.:eek:

Lithium-ion batteries start to degrade very slowly from the very moment they’re manufactured,...even if they are sat on a warehouse shelf and not actually being used.

Obviously the more they are used/charged/discharged the quicker their demise. They do not have an unlimited life-span.

If you buy a 3rd party new 'compatible' replacement Li-ion battery for an older model laptop (HP 15-ay series for example) chances are the battery may (but not necessarily!) have been manufactured some considerable time ago and will not be in absolutely tip-top condition compared to one that’s been manufactured very recently;

…but that’s not to say that it won’t serve you very well, and for some considerable time.

You can of course pay top-whack for an original manufacturers Li-ion battery, but with no guarantee that it’s fresh off the production line either.:(

No idea how Apple do it but the battery in my Macbook Pro is over 4 years old, has 738 charge cycles and still has 84% of original new capacity. I used to refurbish and sell ex-corporate laptops from Dell and IBM/Lenovo worth £1000+ and have had my hands on hundreds if not thousands of them and by 2-3 years old the batteries were pretty shot with just half that number of charge cycles on them.

To be fair, I've only bought one generic, which is a twelve cell extended battery for my 2008 ACER Aspire One Netbook. Still going strong, though admittedly rarely used.

Using a Toshiba battery from 2009 currently.
