    Need something to connect our macbook, ipad and netbook to whilst we are away from home in UK and France.
    Looking at unlocked huawei 5573 and getting a Giffgaff sim, 20gb for £20????????
    What would you get?

    Nothing. I'd just make sure I had a mobile phone contract which gave me decent data and allowed me to use my allowance abroad as they all currently do in France and enable the hotspot function on the mobile phone and connect the devices to that. Done that whenever I've gone abroad in the EU for the last decade. Absolutely no need whatsoever to be buying mifi type dongles, extra SIMs, taking out extra contracts etc when you already have the ability built into your smartphone.

    That's a bit of a contradiction;

    So where would that come from, if they don't already have it?

    Mobile phone Hotspot is good for occasional use, not for always on, with three other devices.
    You'd have to keep the phone on permanent charge and it might get a bit hot.
    Then what happens if the one with the phone needs to go out?

    Either they have enough on the contract they're on (I have unlimited on mine) or they upgrade.

    Works fine for me, your phone won't get too hot if you're using a decent charger. Wife is doing the same this weekend, she's away competing with the dogs and has my autistic son with her. He'll be online through her phone on his iPad most of the time they're there when not racing. I doubt she turns off the hotspot mode all weekend.

    I've done it past at home when changing phone providers, sometimes for weeks.

    For France it may be worth looking at free.fr , not in english though but there is info here in English , it seems like circa 30 euros for 100Gb , but you will need to cancel at the end of 30 days. The coverage depends on where you are going of course, but may be worth looking at , I will be since they have a reseller (Maison de la Presse) where we are going

    If you are thinking about GiffGaff, it might actually be cheaper for them to get a new SIM, since they get a bonus on sign up. Plus they can start the data plan when they want and not on the renewal date of their current package.

    They can buy a MiFi for as little as £10. What happens if the person with the contract takes the phone out, even to sit by the pool? Everyone else's connection goes down.

    Just because it is what you do, does not mean it will suit the OP and their family.

    Personally, I would look at what is available in France for when it comes to a SIM, as I imagine that you won't get the best performance from a Roaming SIM.
