Impounded Motorbike

Hey all,

My mate’s 125cc bike has been impounded and we haven’t got a clue on how to get it out of there!! My mate’s insurance policy has been cancelled as apparently they don’t deal with impounded bikes... Our mate has been caught riding it with no insurance so that’s why its been impounded. Apparently the bike has to be insured in order to be collected. Is there anything he can do to get it out of there as no insurer wants to insure him as he let his mate ride the bike without insurance... Apparently recovery doesn’t work as the bike is not insured? Any advice? Cheers.

Talk to a broker like Carole Nash, Bennetts, Adrian Flux.

When getting insurance you need to mention thats its impounded or you may waste everyones time when you find the policy says not to be used for impounded vehicles.

    Is the bike worth collecting?

Yeah, bike’s over £2k so I’d say it is... And he had just bought it too...

Just bought it and got six points on the way not a good start. Impending prosecution and a cancelled policy ain't going to be cheap insurance.
  • I think it is best for everyone that the bike remains impounded.

Your friend doesn't appear mature enough to own such a machine.
  • so he let your mate borrow it knowing he had no insurance? not sure I would let my mate run around on my new 2 grand!

your mate seems not to worry about such things...cant he just ride it out?

Yeah, they’re a bunch of knobs tbh. Tried helping them but I guess he’s gonna have to say bye to the bike

He might be better off selling it to someone (if that's allowed when it's impounded) and having them insure and collect it. He'll need to take a pretty big hit for someone to even entertain buying an impounded bike but it might allow him some money back.

A broker might insure him with 6 points and an impound, but I dread to think what it'd cost.

I would respectfully suggest that if your friend wants advice that they post themselves.

    Not your problem.

The bit I don't understand is why the bike owner's insurance has been cancelled, and why he can't use it to get the bike free.

The other mate, the uninsured rider - fair enough. He was riding uninsured, the bike's been impounded, he's facing an IN10.

But the keeper, who has insurance on the bike to cover himself? Surely he just rocks up, shows his policy, pays the penalty (handing the bill over to the idiot later), and rides home...

There's more to this, isn't there...?
