To be honest, when I saw the news, I thought "Big deal; my iPhone will still harass me to install updates no matter how often I click "Later" or somesuch option.

I'm happily using an iPhone 5S, replaced the battery late last year when sorely needed (iSmash are excellent and cheap), and only installed the big software updates for one of two reasons: firstly, because the Microsoft Outlook app ceased to work with Gmail (and could not be updated to the latest version without upgrading iOS) and secondly, once I'd made that jump, just gave in to the Apple juggernaut.

It is so much slower now thanks to the OS updates but also I really dislike all the cosmetic changes introduced with each update.

If any big phone manufacturer continued to produce a decent 4.5 inch phone I would upgrade in a heartbeat but it seems I will be purchasing a refurbished iPhone 5S or SE when this one perishes.

My SE is now 3 years old, gets charged daily and still shows 80% battery.

Running iOS 12.3 with no apparent slow down.

I also don’t want a huge mobile, maybe one day Apple will return to small elegant phones, like the SE...

There is much more information avaiable about the state of your iPhone battery than you might think.

iMazing is a free App (upgradeable at cost for complete functionality) but which in the free version gives battery info as follows (this from one of my two SE's):
Battery Current Charge: 1006 mAh (94.0%)
Battery Design Max. Charge: 1600 mAh
Battery Effective Max. Charge: 1070 mAh (66.9%)
    Battery Charge Cycles: 432
    Battery Temperature: 27.3 °C / 81.1 °F
    Battery State: Charging (0.7 Watt)
    Battery Instant Amperage: 157 mA
    Battery Instant Voltage: 4309 mV
    Battery At Warn Level: No
    Battery At Critical Level: No
    Battery Model: 0003-F
    Battery Serial Number: F5D7117XXXXXXXXXX
    Battery Manufacturer: F
    Battery Avg. Temperature: 24.0 °C / 75.2 °F
    Battery Min. Temperature: 1.1 °C / 34.0 °F
    Battery Max. Temperature: 57.3 °C / 135.1 °F
    Battery Max. Charge: 1038 mA
    Battery Max. Discharge: -2151 mA
    Charger: usb host
    Charger Watts: 2
    Charger Voltage: 5000 mV
    Charger Amperage: 500 mA

    and this from the other:
Battery Current Charge: 1041 mAh (76.9%)
Battery Design Max. Charge: 1600 mAh
Battery Effective Max. Charge: 1353 mAh (84.6%)
    Battery Charge Cycles: 441
    Battery Temperature: 23.9 °C / 75.0 °F
    Battery State: Charging (0.4 Watt)
    Battery Instant Amperage: 105 mA
    Battery Instant Voltage: 4084 mV
    Battery At Warn Level: No
    Battery At Critical Level: No
    Battery Model: 0003-F
    Battery Serial Number: F5D7117YYYYYYYYYY
    Battery Manufacturer: F
    Battery Avg. Temperature: 24.0 °C / 75.2 °F
    Battery Min. Temperature: 11.6 °C / 52.9 °F
    Battery Max. Temperature: 52.1 °C / 125.8 °F
    Battery Max. Charge: 1038 mA
    Battery Max. Discharge: -2274 mA
    Charger: usb host
    Charger Watts: 2
    Charger Voltage: 5000 mV
    Charger Amperage: 500 mA
You'll note that there iOS reports at least two ambiguous sounding parameters - Battery Effective Max. Charge and Battery Max. Charge, neither of which come close to Battery Design Max. Charge: 1600 mAh.

Amyone shed better light on any of the parameters or combinations of parameters? No wonder Apple can manipulate the performance having given itself so many mysterious parameters to play with ...
