my dad passed away and i am trying to deal with certificate of confirmation to help out my mum, it seemed pretty straightforward as all it entailed was their joint marital home where both own 50% share, 1 bank account and a life policy.

after carefully reading the guidance notes for C 1 and c5 forms i sent off the paperwork however it has been returned with note to say inventory is not accurately completed and everything else seems fine

so i understand that I have to title it Estate in Scotland then the address of their property but clearly i have some format or wording wrong. i can see from this site they are really fussy about wording, can anyone help with the wording i should use in relation to detailing the property which was 50% owned by my dad (this property did not have survivor clause in deeds therefore must be listed)

also secondly the bank account and life policy can you tell me if they get listed under the same title being ESTATE IN SCOTLAND or something else?

finally do i need to enter nil balances for estate in england and wales etc or not include them at all as there is none??

ohhh one last thing, we can't find the policy number of the life policy can i write 'not known'?

any help really at all i'd be grateful

I put a heading "Heritable Estate in Scotland", then item 1 was "address of property 'being the subjects described in the disposition by ... in favour of ...., recorded General Register Sasines County of Forfar, date. I used a value based on recent sales of the same type of house in the same area, and they were happy with that.
I then had a new heading "Moveable estate in Scotland", with items 2,3, detailing bank account, etc, and i imagine this is where you would detail the insurance policy also.
I inserted "Estate in England and Wales" and "Estate in Northern Ireland" both with values of £0 in column 4.
Then insert the summary with values in column 2:
    Summary
    Estate in Scotland £xxxx
Estate in England and Wales £0
    Estate in Northern Ireland £0
    Total for Confirmation £XXX
This will be the same total as in Column 4.

    Hope this helps

That sounds a pretty good summary but I'd add the SCOTlis website is excellent for getting an idea of house value plus has a reference number to identify it.  Also, my local sheriff court was very particular about location of the estate.  For example, my father had a bank account at a Scottish branch of one of the big High Street names and I was requested to resubmit the form with this listed as Estate in England and Wales, due to the bank being headquartered there.

The headquarters of the financial institutions dictate where they are placed in the inventory. For example Bank of Scotland has its headquarters in Scotland but Nationwide has its headquarters in England therefore the accounts details must be entered into moveable estate in Scotland for Bank of Scotland and moveable estate in England and Wales for Nationwide also the life policy will be the same rules wherever the institution has its headquarters.
