Before being dropped in to the recycling tub in our kitchen, each plastic item is inspected for possible gardening usefulness!
Larger white lids - if they have a rough back surface, are cut up for plant labels. If a shiny back surface, or sheets of white packaging, they're placed in the darker corner of the greenhouse to reflect light.
Spare plants go into small pots, possibly enhanced with a tester paint pot, then into a lid, then into a plastic bag, then to the Charity Shop.
Clear trays are used as covers on seed trays.
Clear plastic bottles are cut into rounds, then a 'fringe' is cut around one edge. These are put around plants, as snails can't get over the top.
Trays are used for seeds, also filled with stones and used to weigh down mulch or sheets of recycled polythene.
Large plastic tubs and leaking buckets are used to grow early potatoes in the greenhouse.
Small bottles are dunked into boiling water, which makes them go quaintly wonky, then they serve as eye protection for the tops of canes.
(Plastic straws are washed and reused as plastic straws!)
When plastic items are at last old, broken and cloudy, they finally go to be recycled.

    What about margarine tubs ?
Our recycling company doesn't take them.,...
This seems to be a common problem - no standard list of recyclable containers.

Different facilities have the capability to recycle different materials - this seems to be randomly down to investment/demand, for example our council bins are completely crap for recycling anything, so we take all our recycling to the local supermarket where a far wider range of plastics (and tetrapaks) are accepted

And like the previous poster I'm always raiding the recycling for nice containers

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Our local pub has dispensed with plastic straws - in favour of seashell made straws -which are not vegan friendly - so have had to revert to plastic again...,

Vegans have a lot to answer for...Don't they eventually destroy the Earth in order to build an intergalactic super-highway?

    I read it somewhere.

I see that single use plastics are yet again in the firing line

    1. Ear buds
    2. Drinking Straws

    This got me thinking
Disposable water filters - how many of these do we get through annually - do they decompost ?
    Nope !!

They do recycle them though and our local Argos has a special dispenser for used ones. The only reason I have them is that our water is unbelievably hard. (Edited to say sorry, I see this has already been mentioned.)

I reuse loads of plastic and only throw it away when it is past redemption but I wonder whether putting it in the recycling is the right thing? Is brittle used stuff any good or are we just contaminated the binful? We need to know so much more about the way it is all dealt with and the sooner it is standard throughout the better.

Yes, but I'm afraid I kept it in the car most of the time.:o
I haven't fully come out yet, this being Devon and folks somewhat suspicious of anyone carrying anything other than a sheep or a loaded 12 bore.
