I currently have a traditional fireplace with a gas fire in. It is a 1930's house. Do you know how I find out if there are any regulations for having open fires in my street?

We have a very open plan downstairs area and free access to woos so were hoping that this would decrease heating bills in the long run and heat house a lot better.

Once the fire has gone out, Toria, the open chimney will let out all the heat generated from other sources.
  • Hi toria27,

I will soon be doing the same in my house which has a plastered over fireplace.

I found the Solid Fuel Association website very useful.

    http://www.solidfuel.co.uk/frame/main.html

They do loads of leaflet on the various fuels, the current regulations for hearths and surrounds etc. Most can be downloaded directly.

They also do a specific leaflet for those who wish to open up an old unused fireplace........

To get over the problem Ken68 mentions, I intend to fit an solid fuel 'insert' style fire to my fireplace.

are you allowed to just go and chop down trees for your own use in someone elses woods?

thanks for replying everyone. I will take a look at those sites you suggested one-day-rodney should be helpful.

My dad is a scrap man and does skip hire and there is unlimited wood available through that not from a wood (should have said that) 2 people working for him already take home enough wood through the winter for their fires.
  • sorry,

i think i miss read your typo.... lol

  • Sorry if this is too late and you have aready got things sorted. Not sure if your gas fire has already had a liner put in. If so this will have to be taken out then chimney check to see if it is OK of you need a new liner.

If you go down this route you may be better to get a wood burner as it will give you more heat and also stop alot a wasted heat up the chimney when out.

Had our chimney lined last week so we could start using a wood burner...now we're sweltering! :D Unsurprisingly, I'd recommend one ;)

    Woodburner all the way!
Just came back from a rented cottage in Wales with one and it was ace. Amount of heat it kicked out was incredible.
