Contract Start Date on Order Date or Go Live Date?

Hi,
I placed an order with TalkTalk Broadband on the 22nd of April. The earliest 'go live/installation date' option they gave me was the 8th of May, so I chose this option.
Since it went live, I have been having a few issues with the internet playing up, (yes, they were all logged with them) so I just called up to try and cancel, but they are saying that I need to pay the whole 17.5 months remaining upfront as the cancellation charge.
This is because they are saying that the contract started when I placed the order on the 22nd of April and NOT when the services went live. (despite me not having any option to chose an earlier installation date).
They only have a 20 day 'get out' option, which they start from the date of the order.
It is like they deliberately only gave me a late 'installation go live' date, so I did not have sufficient time to actually use their services to see what it was like.
I had an issue from the day that it went live and the technical team just told me to wait 1 day, and then another said to wait another week. It's like this was all done deliberately so it passed the 20 days cancellation period.
I am guessing that no matter how 'fair' this is, I have no option but to stay with them for the next 17.5 months?
Thanks
