Neither of those are any use whatsoever against the multiple instances of malware that are likely running on your computer.

your computer sounds like it in a sorry state !!
Avast certainly wont help and is likely the cause of a lot of your problems

If I were you I would do a clean install using the media creation tool to create an install usb key of windows 10.

I think you have missed the point on this one. The problem is not malware, but the CPU.

Take a look at post #28.
That CPU is barely better than a Netbook processor from nine years ago. How many people are happily running those with a mechanical hard drive?
Couple that CPU with a mechanical HDD and a modern OS and pain is all that will be produced. The only issue is how painful. Twenty minutes is unbearable.

So even if you could cut a start-up time from twenty minutes to ten minutes, that would still be wholly unacceptable. One can only imagine how painfully slow and incapable in use. YouTube 720p would tax such a processor.

No point in wasting a second more on that device. Just spend £50 on a new tower to get a start up time of perhaps a couple of minutes or less, reduced to under thirty seconds with an SSD fitted.

i will give the 2 above a go. i have a problem with page unresponsive if i go on there too soon !!!!

Please don't waste your time. You should have purchased the new tower and moved on with your life by now.
The only way that you can rescue your current PC, is to upgrade the CPU to a dual core example and to fit a solid state drive.
No amount of software will help.

You can buy the CPU and thermal paste for around £5.50 or less; https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Intel-Pentium-D-945-3-4-GHz-Dual-Core-BX80553945-Processor/57649608?iid=183794914631

    and an SSD from £17

    Nothing else can save it.

so, our pc is an intel pentium dcpu2.80 ghz, 32 bit, with installed ram of 2.50gb.the hdd has 74.4gb, of which 31gb is free.

will the tower you have listed in your post 29 still be a good option looking at these numbers ( i know this is a stupid question but i have no knowledge of what the pc uses for what it stores/where it stores).
If so i will go ahead and purchase that one. also there is 10% off the ssd cards at my memory with a code :-)
If you recommend a more powerful tower i am able to spend .
also, another stupid question , will the ram i put into my dell be useable in the newer tower?

    Big difference.

Your current computer has DDR2 memory, the HP has DDR3, so no, you can't reuse it. You might get (literally) a couple of quid for it on ebay.

    None were stupid questions.

That central processing unit is from 2005. Maybe useful for a child to learn some programming language, not for running a modern operating system without the addition of an SSD.

Unless you hope to change your usage pattern and now want to edit 4k video, the £50 Tower will be more than enough for your needs. It is actually surprisingly inexpensive for what it offers. You can pay £54 for the B Grade instead of £50 for the C grade if you'd like it to be better looking.

You can actually hold off on purchasing the SSD until you fire up the new Tower and see how you like it.
Can imagine you will just be relieved to have a far more relaxing experience, even without the SSD.
Once you are sure that you are happy with it, we'll further improve the performance with the fitting of the SSD.
You'll need to make the tea before you fire up the PC, as there will no longer be the long wait during. ;)

Old RAM won't fit new PC.

B Grade; https://www.encore-pc.co.uk/hp-prodesk-400-g1-mt-pentium-g3220-3-00ghz-4gb-ram-250gb-hdd £54 with the 10% off first order code.
Since the order is under £75, there is postage on top.

It's worth noting that if you decide to fit an SSD, you won't actually need to move the original HDD. It will just be a matter of swapping the leads and obtaining another SATA connection lead like these two; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-50cm-SATA-3-6GB-High-Quality-Locking-Red-Serial-ATA-HDD-SSD-Data-Cable-Lead/272805241528
You don't even need to fix the SSD to the case. Since it has no moving parts, it doesn't need to be fastened securely to prevent being jolted.

If you want to add WiFi capability, you can plug one of these in at the back; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/600Mbps-Dual-Band-USB-WiFi-Dongle-Wireless-LAN-Adapter-802-11ac-a-b-5Ghz-2-4Ghz/181688348467

So, purchased and received  husbands trusting me :rotfl:

am going to note all the software on current pc and get that on to new one. Are there things i should do now and onward that will help stop the junk blocking up this new one??. It seems however many times you do a malware/virus/defrag/ccleaner/ cache removal, there is hidden cache stashed somewhere clogging up the pc, so any suggestions are gratefully received.thank you.

Thankfully there was no maleware! May i ask, is avast a known problem software?? i was using avira previously but it started to cause problems when it updated, i think i kept getting adverts popping up. anyway, changed to avast and using its built in password generator, so if you have another recommendation then i would be grateful. Thank you.

What you do next, depends on whether you choose to go forward with the fitting of a solid state drive, in addition to what is currently fitted.
Will make it a lot quicker in use.

But once it settles down, after updates are installed, you won't have the slow down issues that you had before. This is because the new processing unit has a much more developed brain. It would get bogged down as the other did.
The final 'bottleneck' is the slow mechanical storage drive within.
Once that is replaced with a much more efficient solid state drive, you'll really see and feel the difference.

I think that if you are going to do it, that you should do it before you begin to set up the PC. That way you'll only have to do that once.
