It has been! I think as I can afford to take on the mortgage alone, with everything that is going on, staying for another year or 2 is probably in my best interests.

I've put in my mortgage application, so hopefully it goes through without a hitch.  Then plans are to over pay as much as possible next year and redo the kitchen and bathroom, and work out what to do when hopefully some of this has all calmed down.
  • New year! I have had the house for nearly 2 years now. Remortgage application is in with the bank, just waiting for them to come back to say yes or no. Hoping this gets sorted before the fixed term runs out at the end of Feb.
I've been working on my savings plan for the year ahead, my intention is to overpay the mortgage by approx £400 a month which according to the calculators means i'd pay my mortgage off in 14 years instead of 33, so that would be good. I will continue to save alongside overpaying.

I will redo the bathroom and the garden this year so once the mortgage is agreed I will make a start on getting those booked if possible.

  • Remortgage is nearly sorted - just need ex to sign his part of the paperwork and the home will be mine and mine only. Then I will work on getting the parts sorted that I want and look to start making overpayments.
  • Due to complete on the remortgage on 2nd March, then my home will be in own! In the spirit of this, I have arranged for the garden to be revamped, the first in a list of many projects to complete over the next 12 months.  Plus, if this summer is anything like last year I want somewhere nice to spend my time!
From April  will look at my overpayment plan in detail and work out how much I could feasibly pay off before my next remortgage is due in 2 years.

I've been looking into TSBs overpayment system - its frustrating you have to complete a form to overpay rather than just transfer to mortgage account. I will be looking in that case to save u[ chunks of money to make over payments, I think each time i get to £1000 I will make the OP. I also need to get my savings back in order after splashing out on the garden, so will spilt any left over income between the two. I have lots of saving accounts set up but it's frustrating seeing them all with varying amounts, so i think I will consolidate them all into my ISA when the new tax year starts. Not much in the way of interest but, i can see all the money there at least.
Next job for the house is a new bathroom, but this is going to be once I have saved to pay outright for it, so i expect it will be the end of the year i get this done. Then the last and final job will be a new kitchen - hopefully summer of next year.
After that I will see where I am at and decide if the time is right to move or not. It would not be a local move as I won't get any better property for my money and my goal is to be mortgage free ASAP. But if i save and work hard there is the possibility of being able to move further north and I could in maybe 5 years buy somewhere outright.  But thats a choice for another year.

I honestly can't see myself living with someone else again , or even being in a relationship so  I am going to focus on making sure I am as secure as possible.

Congratulations on it being all yours now!  What a rollercoaster you’ve been on but appear to have kept so positive throughout. That can’t have been easy.
