Ohnoes! You couldn't possibly use something as positively ancient as a 12-plate for ~26k/year!

<holds head in hands in despair>

If the 7-10 year old car has average miles of 70-100k in 5 years (the OP wants a car that he can keep) it will have 170-200k miles. It'll be knackered. Or you could say "an old banger":D
  • What about something like this? Or perhaps somethig a bit newer with lower mileage?

It's a shame that diesel cars from before the DPF era are getting a bit long in the tooth - I have a Honda Accord 2.2 diesel from 2003, and while it's insanely boring and predictable in every way, it's fantastic on motorways and does around 53MPG (mostly motorway, as I have another car for 'fun' on twisty roads!)

I'd recommend an Accord or Civic for this kind of motorway-based work, they have the features to make it bearable and return good economy as long as you choose a diesel model.
Given your daily mileage, you shouldn't have any DPF trouble either.
  • Just to top it off, I could hear a rattling underneath the car on my way to pick up the new part - the back box had detatched off its hook. A simple weld and now it seems fine. Might be the start of things slowly going on the car now...

Any recommendations on where to look for a lease? Wouldn't mind seeing what the sums add up to. VW offered me a 1.6 TDI Golf Match for £2.5k upfront £280 a month over 4 years and an optional payment to buy of £6.5k. I don't fancy a lease over 4 years so I'll have a look elsewhere to see what's around. I'm open to a PCH, PCP or buying second-hand outright.
  • The gearbox on the Fiesta is starting to show signs of trouble, so I've achieved my goal of running the car into the ground.

I went to look around at cars today and came across a 2017 Seat Leon Xclusive 1.4 TSI with about 16k miles on the clock for £13k. It seemed very refined to drive. Are these TSI engines any good? Or is diesel still the better option?

They are pretty good IME. I've had 2 Golfs (still have one) and one EOS with versions of that engine and they have all been faultless over about 250k miles in total. The first Golf did 160k miles and the engine was still smooth and quiet.

I'm in agreement here. If the OP was doing half the mileage he is doing, then there would be nothing wrong with a 12 plate. Around 15 plate would be fine.
