Thanks, and another question turned up:
is it better to go for older and lower milage or younger and higher milage??
    Impossible to generalise.

difficult to say... my son had a 9yr old fiesta 1.4 when he passed his test, but it was cheaper for him to insure and use my car - 2litre 2016 ford focus!

I was looking at a Dacia Sandaro for my daughter's first car. £6-7k new and relative cheap insurance.

The nice thing about cars is that they're very easy to move from place to place...

For your budget, you could get 2 cars, both under £1k (in fact, you could get both and spend under £1k total), insure both and still have plenty of change.

My oldest is coming up 21 and has had a Suzuki WagonR since he passed his test - £450 to buy, 1st yr insurance with me as named driver for £1300-odd, 2nd year £950, 3rd year £495. Was a minimum of £600 cheaper than fiesta, corsa, etc.

Yes, you do need to check each car type, confused.com account, and once set up you just need to change the car details, makes it easier. Use registrations from cars for sale on autotrader for different models and you'll see instantly the widely-different costs :)

    Happy hunting....

    .

GunJack, how much did you have to put in for repairs etc, did it pass it's MOTs without fail etc, because I was thinking if I buy such a cheapo car there will be repairs coming up instantly.....
Anyway, I work in the school he still attends, so one car for the two of us good enough for the time being, once he is of to Uni things will change obviously, but that is next year (and on his money....)

Have you actually went to look at those cars in person to know they're suitable for your sons height? They might be but no point focusing on finding a car only to discover its too small.

If you haven't already, I'd go for a day around a few dealers trying out the size of different cars & make a note of the ones that are suitable for both your needs then set about trying to find one I want to buy (and obviously check that one out before buying it too).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Who is the main driver and policy holder?
If yourself you need to check the ncbs for additional drivers.
