If you look at it from a safety point of view me being there or not won't stop it catching on fire. If it did catch on fire i would have to leave the house anyway.
So i would much rather get a notification on my phone that smoke is detected and then i ring the fire brigade rather than be in the house and have to run out.
I know that if i'm in the house i may be able to smell a problem earlier but i'm not going to be sat in the same room as it when it's on so being home won't make much difference.
I'd also worry that your insurance company would refuse to pay out, they'll look for any excuse.0 -
The fire brigade tell you not use washing machines or tumble driers or dishwashers over night while asleep or not in the house.

Check out number 3 and 4 and how many do that?

You might wish to start your own thread on your problem, as this one has gone completely off topic whilst people argue about something unrelated to the original question. The general advice given in the first few posts will probably be useful though.0 -
When i read the title i thought to myself "i bet its not a washing machine, its a washer dryer". Lo and behold...
They are unreliable pigs of things. We had a hotpoint one and it basically burnt out every year - 18 months needing either a drum, set of weights, ECU board, or on one occasion the whole lot.
Fortunately we had insurance on it, but we eventually gave up and sold it.
Some are reliable. We are on our 2nd Miele washer-dryer. The first one only lasted 20 years0 -
Hi Guys, I have been away for a while. Thanks for all the replies and information.
After a lot of thought, and more importantly, discussing it with my partner we have decided not to chase this up and to buy a new machine when this one dies. With the cost of getting an independent inspection, especially the teardown/cost required to get at the bearings, and the large chance that it is just wear & tear I don't think it's worth the time, effort and money.
I may get a Meile washer/dryer if it will fit under my worktop (thanks for the suggestion Murphybear). If not I'll have to get a separate washing machine and dryer. After this and a previous built in washer/dryer failing I just don't think they are of good enough quality.
Zanussi/Electrolux contaced me to ask if I wanted to go ahead with buying another machine, minus the cost of the engineers visit. When I said I wouldn't they are going to refund me part of the charge, so all's not too bad.
Now to find one that looks like it will last a long time. Like looking for a needle in a haystack, though I do see Hotpoint is doing a 10 year warranty on parts.
Once again, thanks to you all.0 -

No no no no no.
And again, no.
The Hotpoint warranty is dreadful. To get the 'free' parts, you must pay their engineers to fit them. At their own fitting rates, which are ridiculous. Don't go near it with a barge pole.0 -

Thanks for the heads up.
Looks like it's a hard job finding a reliable washing machine or dryer, won't be getting a washer/dryer again. Maybe Bosch?0
