But it's not fit for purpose (keeping my daughter safe!)

Are you sure. You've already said that the expert said it was "ok but not perfect". To me, OK means it is safe. If it was unsafe, surely they'd have said this.

You may get more suggestions if you say what car seat it was, and what model car.

I find most people who buy car seats buy for fashion or price.

The way you should buy is checking out if the manufacture says the seat is suitable for your car.
    You didn't.
    Thats not the retailers problem.

Before purchasing, I did ask the retailer and they said it should fit in my car no problem. But I had to have the seat so upright, it caused my daughter to flop forward, to the point her head was between her knees when she fell asleep, which is dangerous. The independent expert I had look at it said the only way round this was to roll up a towel and place it under the seat, which is not what I paid almost £200 to have to do!

£200. So you chose this seat why exactly?
Exactly who was this independant expert. A rolled up towel is not safe

so I paid an independent, registered car seat professional to physically check it

    There is such a thing???

Out of interest how much did they charge?

The child fits in the seat fine, it's the fit with your car that's the problem.
That's not the retailer or manufacturer's fault - always test fit before buying.

The retailer owes you nothing at this point.

All the car seats I have seen for younger children have a harness fitted to restrain the child,

The booster seats for older children use the safety belts fitted to the car.

So how does the child's head fall down to her knees when she falls asleep?
