Unfair manager?

I didn't get arsey, I just left with the other employees who were free to go and enjoy the sunshine.
People here saying it puts me in a bad light, for me it puts the company in a bad light.... that it singles people out unfairly and if that kind of treatment continues I won't want to work for them.
You would think that after the extra hours I have worked over my time for them that they'd reward me with being free to go home early....but no it's the guys that always finish early who are free to go home early......I have to stay....It doesn't make me feel appreciated whatsoever, not good for my moral, not the way to treat an employee who has put in extra hours, never been late and done a solid job.
Like I just put it.....you work in a factory....manager says everyone is free to go home early, you are singled out to stay to do a menial task within a massive factory where there are hundreds of menial tasks that could be done......
Yeah - now you understand where I am coming from.
I do work in a factory and Im often asked to stay on and finish up. The girls I work along with often have to work on a Saturday to get their contracted hours in, if we have had a quiet week and finish early, or go find themselves menial tasks to punch in the hours. If they are contracted for 40 hours and get paid for 40 hours, they have to put in 40 hours or the time short is taken off their holiday pay. No employer in their right mind is going to pay 40 hours and accept you working only 38 of them0 -
Seems people want to assume this 15 minute job was some critically important job that only 1 person could do.....no.....
The job was trivial and menial, given to me to make up my hours....
On top of this, I typically finish late without pay and with no lunch break - therefore doing the company a favour.....this was the first time I had been back early in ages and I'd expect on this rare occasion the favour to be returned and I'd be free to go, but no, the manager wants to single me out to stay by giving me menial tasks while others who are always finishing early get to go home early.
All you people against me is laughable, none of you would be happy in this situation. Although a pretty minor scenario, nobody would be happy with this.
You are totally missing the point. I certainly didn't say, or think, it was a critical job to be done. You have been asked to do a job, menial or otherwise, which can be completed within your normal working hours. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a manager expecting any or all staff members to work their contracted hours.
You have only been there 1 months so I don't understand how or why you "typically finish late without pay and no lunch break". What have you done to address this issue?
You say others 'always' go early but you have only been there one month so hardly time enough to see a persistent pattern to how people are treated.
It's not a case of being happy with a situation. The simple reality is that an employer's main interest is in getting a job done, not in creating a happy, holiday camp atmosphere for employees. You definitely come across as having a sense of entitlement, and expect to be paid whether you are at work or not.
You don't like the answers, but the same broad response has come in virtually all answers. Ask yourself a question - "Is everybody else wrong, or do I need to take a look at myself?"0 -
You evidently need to get your head out of your !!!!.
I would sack you on the spot and play hard to get on any accrued holiday / notice pay.
What a ridiculous thread.
You want to raise a grievance for having to actually do some work in work hours.0 -
Wow, op you do know in today’s office environment nearly everyone has do do some menial tasks e.g photocopying taking a turn getting the coffee etc..
The bigger the office the more menial tasks there can be. I have a team sometimes I will ask one member to do something, sometimes another team member.. there is an amount of work to be done and I try to share the load between team members.
But a task requested in work hours.. that takes 15 minutes should be completed0 -
Op I'm just wondering a few things.
Do you feel undervalued or inadequate?
Do you think you are better than most of your colleagues?
Do you get into many fights?
And presuming your not a bouncer or boxer, a multiple choice question. You may select one answer.
Have you been punched in the face at work...
A) FrequentlyRegularly
C) Occasionally
D) InfrequentlyMr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -
Don't feel sorry for the OP, they have their life plan all worked out in cryptocurrency and cannabis stocks. They've probably peaked job wise according to the Peter principle.

Working a minimum wage job he's going to have to hope that cryptocurrency and cannabis are extremely rewarding as a two bedroom Victorian terrace in Guildford is going to cost him the best part of half a million. My heart bleeds.0 -
Seems people want to assume this 15 minute job was some critically important job that only 1 person could do.....no.....
The job was trivial and menial, given to me to make up my hours.....the manager was like 'what can I get you to do to make up your hours'.....and picked something out......whilst other employees were putting on their rucksacks and heading out the door 30 minutes before their contracted hours were up.
The job could have been done by 3 or more people and as well as this our company building is huge, so the manager could have easily found a trivial, menial job for anybody that came back early to make up their time.....
but no, they were free to go....
Let's give you a scenario...
Bob works at Sainsbury's, everyone is free to go home early, but the manager singles Bob out to stay to stack shelves even though there are 20 rows of shelves to stack, floors to clean, Melons to unpack in the warehouse.....
This is fair to you guys? this is alright? You would be ok with this situation? are you crazy? you people like being walked over? wouldn't stand up for yourself? so if this starting happening on a regular basis you would be fine with this? I am certain you would not be fine with this.
OP, if you have contracted hours then your employer is entirely within their rights to expcet you to work those contracted hours, even if some of that time involves them requiring you to do work which you feel is trivial, menial or could have been done as well or better than someone else.
It's not inappropriate and if you sought to raise a grievance about ityou would look wildly out of touch and unprofessional.
If you are not being given the appropriate legal breaks than that is a totally separate issue which you can raise.
It is worth bearing in mind that you don't know what other employees are doing or have done in the past. For all you know, those being allowed to leave early have gone above and byonf in the past and have earned a bit of flexibility. Some may have specifc flexible working time arrngements in place or other reasons for being allowed to go early, which you would not necessarily know anything about.
If you are being paid for your contravcted hours, then you have to do you job during those hours, whether or not, in your view, other employees are being asked to work the same amount of time or do similar tasks. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Don't worry about what everyone else is doing; just concentrate on doing your own job. Agree that what the manager expected of you was perfectly reasonable. I am just coming to the end of a job that I took whilst awaiting pre employment checks for another job where I have to work every minute that I am clocked in, however "menial" the task may seem. To me that is firstly fair because I am taking a wage for the whole time that I am clocked in and secondly if the "menial" tasks didn't get done then things would rapidly start to go downhill further up the chain.
If I were your manager I would be furious that you walked out after doing half of a task simply because you couldn't be bothered and if I were looking to lose anyone from the department then it would be the person that doesn't take any pride in their work.0 -
OP - you talk about being back early
Is this something like a post man, milk man, leaflet delivery, door to door sales etc
Everyone has a route to do - and when you have the route done you are generally free to leave?
you are new - so it is taking you longer to do the route than the contracted hours and in time it should get quicker as you learn shortcuts etc?
Its not worth raising a complaint if you like the come
You also should have finished the job the manager set you.
I do see why you are annoyed you were picked to do it, but its one of those things - tomorrow it could be someone else.
Maybe the company doesn't want people to assume they are always free to leave when the route (or whatever) is done - most of the time you will be but not always0
