Hi, details are a bit sketchy because i am at work so dont know the full picture but my mother in law has been contacted by N Power (her current provider) and been told her DD is going from £72 a month to £386 a month!! due to a recalculation back to 2016 - as you can imagine my MIL is pretty shocked.
what is the best way to approach an issue like this?
thanks in advance, sorry about the vagueness of the post?

When did she last submit a meter read ?
Or does she leave it up to the meter man?
I don’t think they can back bill more than 18 ? Months so that is a very good tac to try with them.0 -

I knew i had patchy information, it was actually Scottish Power a brief look at her main bill (3.5K one) shows she started with
credit balance 2247.92 (dont know why???)
then they've quoted their tariffs and then charged additional
Fixed Oct 2016 - 1208.64
Fixed June 17 - 502.81
Fixed Dec 18 - 688.44
these are the main additions to the bill.
something is amiss because the usage from Jan 16 to Mar 16 (64 days) is 11262 kWh of electricity0 -

In which case you can ignore any backbilling suggestion
Backbilling occurs where a supplier seeks additional payment for unbilled energy used more than 12 months prior to the error being detected and a corrected bill being issued
Here the payments were already made. This appears to simply be a corrective bill, which should have a balance owed of £151.97
I don't see how that culminates in a £3.5k bill and neither can I see any possible reason the supplier would now be seeking the increase in monthly payment you now say they are.
So just follow the advice in the second link I gave above0 -

For a gas heated house this is very high - electricity is typically 3000kwh a YEAR.
Are the readings ESTIMATED or ACTUAL.
Jan 16 - Mar 16 is a very old period - what was the last 12 months?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
