Is my internet slow?

I just tried using a website related to offering private lessons to people, and it said "Your internet is Slow...
The lesson can go ahead, but you may need to turn your camera off if you have issues. ..

PING 56ms,
DOWNLOAD 19.80mbps,
UPLOAD 0.80mbps

I called my ISP, Zen, and they asked if Iam on ADSL or Fibre, I said ADSL, and they said that for ADSL that's not slow, that's the highest speed there is.

I then looked https://www.speedtest.net/reports/united-kingdom/

And they only show mobile phone speeds, but I see they are like 25Mbps download and 12Mbps upload. So perhaps landline speeds are even more?

So, is my Internet slow?

Not for ADSL, no. It's extremely good, and not bad by any standard.

Whether it's suitable for the activities you're looking to perform is another matter.

Probably not a problem just try it and turn camera off if problems .
A lot will depend upon what you are viewing in these private lessons .

Internet as you called it varies between .05 meg and 1000 meg .
Your broadband connection from the ISP will depend upon what you buy and the quality of the line to your house .

PS watching a HD film at about 10 meg download with no problems .

Thanks. Why does that link show mobile speeds as much higher?
  • As above, for ADSL, that download speed is about as good as it gets !

However, upload speeds on ADSL are, by virtue of the technology, limited to 1 mbps, so using the likes of high definition video and audio two-way connections are likely to be problematic.

I notice my 4G mobile has

13 Mbps download and 4.8Mbps upload.

So compared to my landline internet, my mobile has a worse download speed but better upload speed.

But why does speedtest speak of mobiles having 25Mbps download and 12Mbps upload, as an average?

What technology are they using that I am not?

And when it comes to landline internet, are most people in the UK on fibre? Or are most on ADSL?

You can view netflix at a fraction of that; even in HD at much slower speeds than yours. Ultra HD is 25mb

Can you alter in lesson video size/data rate?
  • If you search for "4G speeds" you will see the theoretical maximum, however real life speeds will depend on signal strength to the cell mast, the number of users connected to the mast when you run the test and how much bandwidth is allocated by the system provider.

As for fixed lines, there is ADSL, Fibre To The Cabinet (last part of connection over the phone line), Fibre To The Home (Real Fibre) and Vigin's offering which they call fibre, but comes into the home over high speed co-axial cable.

I have been having problems with my internet connection.
I did a speed test on mymobile and it came back at 30Mb, on other days it has been as low as 5Mb.
I have a new mobile, but I think the problem is slow Plusnet. My PC at home connects via wi-fi and that has been having problems too.
My phone uses wi-fi first, if only it could use data if the wi-fi was slow.

I guess it’s the upload speed that the issue is being flagged for
