Sentinel Gold Renewal

  • Yes - I can finally report that I have had a similar experience as the previous poster. Sentinel cancelled my old policy (& gave me credit for the unused portion) and created a new 'on-line' one. :)
  • I too have been with Sentinel since the year dot and have faithfully paid up each year for cover (£37 this year). I have some major changes to make to my details and was glad to see that at last I could change my details online. Not so. Yes, I can sign in but there are none of my details showing. Reading other posts I now know the reason why. When sending, or trying to send e mails to Sentinel about updating my details, I get a message saying that no e mails can be sent at present???? I'm getting fed up with this. No way am I going to send all my details in the post and I'd be ages on the phone giving details, which I also don't want to do. I think I'm just going to cancel. Anyone found any alternative cover? I've got household insurance and have yearly travel insurance so I assume I'd just need the basic cover for convenience. What do you think? :(
  • Received my sentinel gold renewal yesterday, £80 for 3 years.

Called today, quoted £42 for 3 years with Halifax card care - they said they couldn't match, offered to reduce premium to £70, I refused and I said I'd cancel.

Just before I cancelled, I mentioned that had seen on web that other customers had premium reduced to £50 for 3 years, and I was prepared to pay that but no more.

Sales agent spoke to a supervisor and then agreed to reduce premium to £50 for 3 years.

    So, result!

Thanks to everyone who has posted above for info!

Like most of the other posters here I've been paying for card//document/key protection with Sentinel (originally Credit Card Sentinel, now called Sentinel Gold) for many many years - probably 20years or more.

I noticed last year at renewal the price escalated to a level which makes you think twice rather than just automatically renew and that I'd been put on Sentinel Gold. I assumed it was an unasked for upgrade of level of cover and meant to look into it but just simply never had the time.

This year it's gone up again to £36.72 for a year. Strange figure. I phoned to query it and ask to be downgraded to the Basic level of cover but, guess what it doesn't exist anymore..so it's Gold or nothing. When I told them I'd probably cancelled they offered to lower it to £29. Whoopy doo. I said I'd probably still cancel, that it was far too expensive and that in a very few number of years the cost had nearly doubled!

They said 'no problem'!!! Call ended.

No offer of £50 for 3 years like the above poster.
  • Seeing as the thread has returned to the first page, its probably a good time to make people aware that Sentinel Gold will be available with as a free perk on the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Gold Classic current account from January 2011.

So I tried to log in to my account today & got a message saying account was inactive. Rang Sentinel customer services. They said payment had not been made for the renewal. We checked they had got the correct credit card details (they did). Turns out they never took the payment & so policy now cancelled. They say they are unable to re-activate the policy so will need to set up a new one, but that will be £89.95! Had previously agreed £70 for 3 years. Got put through to sales - they would not budge on price so told them where to stick it! :)
  • Are these Sentinel policies really necessary if you have very comprehensive household insurance and travel insurance? Surely you can alert the credit card company via their emergency number if a card is lost or stolen?
Having read the thread most of the way through, I see someone posted a similar query to mine some way back, but there was no answer....

I'm not sure that all these extra "insurances" are really necessary, a bit like mobile phone insurance really, just wanting to hear other people's views on it. I had Sentinel or CPP or similar for some years and got sick of handing over money for nothing to these companies and cancelled.

Just wondering about the wisdom of all these additional "insurances" really.

Fair point, but I never considered this as an "insurance policy". For me it was the convenience of having just one number to call if my purse should get stolen or lost. I have several credit/bank/store cards that I carry with me. Having to call each company separately would be a real chore, especially while abroad. That's the main reason I used Sentinel. :)
  • Are you sure you need this ripoff cover as it is usually included with contents and/or buildings insurance worth checking

Are there any other companies offering this type of collective protection?
