I think it's very unlikely it'll be a problem if there are no defaults, bankruptcies, CCJs, IVAs, fraud markers etc etc. Everyone seems to be up to their eyeballs in debt these days. The problem is if you've got fraud markers, or you're in unmanagable debt and would be open to bribery, blackmail, that sort of thing as a result. If it's just debt I wouldn't worry too much, unless anyone here has any in depth knowledge of police policies on this sort of thing.

That's generally the long & the short of it

    i.e.
    1) Are you generally seen to be 'doing the right thing' ? i.e. paying back all what you owe according to the original lending agreement?
    2) Are you possibly exposing yourself to the temptation of 'doing the wrong thing', such as stealing or accepting a backhander due to the pressure of unscrupulous lenders who want their money back quicker or scare you with 5000% APR rates.

Standard credit card debt and/or regulated loans are not usually an issue, particularly where it can be demonstrated you have been keeping up with repayments (and presuming you will have more money coming in if you get the job as a student police officer, than you have done previously)
