The answer is likely to be very different depending on if the starting point is Acton, Marlow, Didcot, Stow on the Wold, Hereford... But all are about half way between M4 and M40.

It also depends which way round the M25 he's ultimately going.

I have the choice of these two to get to the M25 in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Anyone happen to know which would be least beset by delays and restrictions at night currently?

Whichever he chose, he's done it by now.;)

I've always assumed that the OP lives in the Cheltenham area (Charlton Kings is a suburb of Cheltenham) based on his user name, which would align with the reponse in post #7. But relying on specialist knowledge in other posters is not an ideal way to get help.

Loads of Average speed cameras for the implementation of smart motorways on the M4. I've allowed at least 30 minutes more journey time - which is great for a 10am flight from Heathrow...

In that case A417 to birdlip, across on th A436 to the A40, join the M40 at Oxford.

My experience of doing that journey very early in the morning is that other on the A436 which is 50mph limited for a lot of it and with limited visibility for overtaking, you can "make progress" without too much difficulty.

In which case he will end to use the A40 as far as Oxford, not sure I’d go that way, it’s mostly single carriageway and usually busy with lorries, it can be a slow old slog.
