I like long posts! Lots of fibre please! :rotfl: But, ah, the books... big, big problem. Big, big books. And lots of them. Sat watching Horizon tonight, on prospect theory (fear of loss is in there somewhere) and I was leafing through an old file of written work, the recycling pile is now two inches taller. And that was just the easy stuff - the books are hard. And the really big ones don't seem to sell on amazon, you have to charge so much for postage. What kind of stuff are you selling on amazon and ebay? You still sound like you're brimming with energy, so I'm going to cross my fingers for you that you make it to NZ. You can do it!

  • morning! Sorry that things are soooo tight again :( Ok I'm going to say something VERY unpopular I suspect but being a good DFW friend I'm gonna say it! Do you not think that it may be a good idea to postpone NZ for a year. A number of reasons for this; 1) Something long term to aim for 2) You could go without the worry of so much debt & enjoy it more 3) You've alot on this year - marathon, oh,dp, getting another job...all very stressful/emotional things and bound to affect your enjymnt of a wonderful holiday...of course it is your decision and I will support you whatever but just wanted to post an alternative view! I know how hard it is as would love to go and see my friends in NZ but also know if I went now I wouldnt enjoy it because I would be financially restricted and want to go with wanton abandon IYKWIM but like you no way I'm jumping off a bridge...anyway hugs whatever you decide!

  • That's good news on the Abbey! :T

Hmmm.. books.. I can't say anything, since I finally got a bookcase in my new flat I keep buying more things to go in it! :o At least you've got extra money from eBay etc to cover it - maybe set yourself a budget for it if you know you can't resist! I love wandering round Waterstones - can't beat that feeling of picking them up and flicking through can you? - but I try to get books from charity shops and off Abebooks (get a bit through Quidco for them as well), Greenmetropolis and Hitflip.

KC - Horizon was interesting wasn't it? Unfortunately I was knackered and couldn't really concentrate towards the end!

It was, wasn't it! I googled prospect theory afterwards, came up with some interesting things, but you're right, it *does* need concentration. Too much right now - I'm off to the post office, just sold a little book on amazon - another one of my oldies-but-goodies - I bought it in 1980!

Pania, about NZ - I'm all for travel, but I can see what ISOM is saying too. Good luck with the decision.

  • I can relate to that, my one big weakness is books. I'm terrible for them. It was my birthday last week and everyone got me a book voucher- sad i know but im in heaven them, i can peruse to my hearts content and as i speed read i buy the biggest most interesting looking ones i can, because they last longer, then i can sit down with birthday choccies and bliss. I do go to library as well but seem to have read most of what is on their shelves and i am always putting in suggestions for new books. i must have bumped up their budget quite a bit by now.

  • The other side of it is that i have boxes of books and i cant bear to let them go. I have been very ruthless lately and categorised them as in will i read them again, will they be useful for referencing etc . some have gone to charity- the ones i got from there and i am thinking of listing on amazon. But the thought of letting them go hurts, i think my next target is to work in a bookshop but i would probably be sacked within the week for reading all their stock.

I can *so* relate to what you're saying, boredofbeingathome - but it was one of the most liberating things I've done, to start selling my old books on amazon - they're good, but a book on women's history published in 1980 is as likely to be bought now for the history of the women's movement in the late twentieth century, as for its views on actual women's history before then! So its got to go! And.... how will I ever move to Barcelona if I have to move all this *stuff* as well! :rotfl:

i've always dreamt of owning a bookshop where i sell only books i've read which would therefore give me wonderful excuses to do lots of reading.

What you should all do is arrange a meet - then swap all your books around.

  • Lots of links for DFW's - too much alchohol, too many books (I have about 6 full shelves full, plus dotted round the house!!) and a tendency for emotional shopping! My mate bought me 2 braindead books tday - what a sweetie & they're NEW!!
