I ask because I can see it on my login but it never appears on my posts. Just curious how they work.

Depends....

You have an avatar set as seen in your profile page


However, with the latest and greatest, all singing, all dancing forum skin, avatars are no longer shown on the forum threads (replaced by standard, default ones)



Anyone still using the old, out of date, unsupported green forum skin can still see user's avatars (where set) on the forum threads



Note, however, users can decide for themselves in their user account options whether or not to display avatars (and/or signatures, images)


Of course, anyone who has opted not to display images will not see the hopefully helpful images included within this post

Ah ha! Thank you! I could not understand why an avatar appeared on my profile page but not on my posts. Now I understand.
