Toyota have quoted me £2,000 for a clutch replacement
My 5 year old Toyota Auris has suffered a clutch problem, basically the pedal hit the floor and remained there, can't engage any gears. Although its racked up almost 100k miles by me, I've had it serviced regularly by Toyota themselves.
So had it toed to Toyota and they charged me £110 for a diagnostic check, then quoted me £2000 for the clutch replacement and a few other parts like master and slave cylinder. Even though their website says £610 for basic clutch replacement, they said their quote includes the other bits and pieces too.
Doubt I'll be buying a another Toyota.

Why would having a clutch fail at 100,000 miles put you off buying another Toyota? Do you think a clutch should last longer? Should it last 200,000 miles? A clutch is a wear and tear item, so is the flywheel and to a lesser extent the master and slave cylinders. So what if the website says they do a BASIC clutch change for £610. Maybe your car needs more than a basic change.
Take the car to an independent garage for another quote if you're not happy with the quote.0 -
Try mr clutch or similar0

So it's most likely to be a clutch hydraulic problem, rather than simple friction plate wear. If it's an annular slave, then leaking will contaminate the friction plate - and the box needs to come out anyway to replace the slave, so might as well put a new clutch in there at 100k anyway. My 5 year old Toyota Auris has suffered a clutch problem, basically the pedal hit the floor and remained there, can't engage any gears.

There y'go. Clutch hydraulics.then quoted me £2000 for the clutch replacement and a few other parts like master and slave cylinder.
Diesel? Did these "few other parts" include the dual mass flywheel?Even though their website says £610 for basic clutch replacement, they said their quote includes the other bits and pieces too.
£610 for a straight clutch replacement is not the same job as they're doing on yours. I suspect changing the clutch master is a fairly invasive job, and may even involve the dash coming out. Clutch master and slave won't be trivial-cost parts. If the DMF is being replaced, there's another substantial parts cost there. It wouldn't surprise me if the combined parts list alone was more than that £610.
Remember, you don't need the job done by a main dealer. Any competent garage will do it at a far lower cost.0 -
Get some other quotes, don't tell the other garages that you have been quoted 2 large from the main dealer though.0

As others have said, if the job includes the DMF, then I can see it approaching that cost.
I'm half way through this job myself on my XC90 - which is slightly more complicated being AWD, but the majority of the job will be similar - there is LOADS to remove to gain access, including the sub-frame and part of the front suspension!
In my case, aftermarket parts costs: DMF is £390, clutch kit £200 and slave £70 - genuine parts from a main dealer will be even more... and before any extra stuff is changed and labour costs added!0 -
Its £750 for a straight forward clutch and DMF replacement on my Mondeo with an independent garage, it is a job that takes several hours to do. Labour costs are around two thirds of that of the main dealer and the parts are cheaper too so it wouldn't come as a shock if I went to my local Ford dealer and they quoted £1500. If as said you have another fault as well then a £2000 bill from the main dealer sounds perfectly reasonable. Get a quote from an independent garage or clutch specialist.
As for the clutch going at 100,000 miles, my grandad had a disability to do with his feet and would go through a clutch every year, the one on my son's Peugeot 307 failed at 70,000 mainly because it had been used for doing short around town journeys. In comparison the one in my last Mondeo was still on its original at 168,000 when I sold it because it did nothing but long journeys out of town so the lifespan of a clutch depends massively on the types of journey it does and the way the car is driven. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. How much is a 5 yer old toyota auris worth with 100k miles?0

We just had a clutch replaced and it cost a grand in total at a specialist independent. The dealer was saying £1500.
I was quite impressed by the independent as he told me I'd get a lower quote from Mr Clutch. But the independent had been recommended by a neighbour and by the other independent who we now use to service the car. I was sufficiently happy with the price and with the level of service.
What also impressed me was that both independents test drove the car and thought that although the clutch was beginning to slip, it was (and should) still be OK. A week later it had gone! Perhaps they both should have noticed it was on the way out, but at least they weren't going "Oooooh. You've got a really expensive problem here and it needs fixing by us now!"0 -
They told you it was starting to slip - that IS the way out. "OK" is only ever going to be very short term in that situation. I presume they were referring to it probably being OK for a specific trip...0
