I've used Command Strips without any palaver about rubbing alcohol at all.

This video doesn't mention it either, best buy Command so!

Command strips, but read it wrong - it's the wall that needs wiping.

"Wipe wall with rubbing alcohol. Do not use household cleaners or water."

Whoops, I've never wiped a wall before using the strips. To date the only time a picture has fallen off was due to me faffing with it and trying to reuse a strip (not recommended :o)

Surgical / methylated spirits or Isopropyl alcohol/isopropanol are probably the equivalents. Nail polish remover tends to have acetone in, so I would avoid that.

Vodka will suffice if you don't have any of the above.

However, I've been using these strips for years and have never wiped either the wall or picture beforehand.

Quite liking the assumptions that I'll have vodka in the house if nothing else - you're not wrong. :)

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Was hoping for something I might already have in.

Aerosol tins of deicer spray tend to have isopropyl alcohol in. Not sure what proportion though. I would think it's quite a lot because if they had too much water in they wouldn't be any use.

Isopropanol is very useful stuff for all kinds of cleaning jobs. Leaves no residue, evaporates quickly and does not have a strong unpleasant smell like meths or surgical spirit. Gets sticker residue off things, excellent for cleaning lenses, microscopes, cameras etc. Some pharmacies sell it (after an interrogation!) but eBay is by far cheaper. I wouldn't be without it.

Basically all they are doing is covering themselves. All they really mean is make sure the surface is clean so it sticks proper.

Never did any if that and nothing has fell off yet.
