Default with Ulster Bank

Hi I'm if anyone can help me out.
My husband applied for his first mortgage in March & got refused due to a default with Ulsterbank. This was the first time we were made aware of this default. As soon as he found out he went to Uksterbank directly to try & rectify the problem.
What happened was, back in 2015, he closed his Ulsterbank account. He knew he had some money in his account, wasn't sure exactly how much, so withdrew £30, took the money from the cash machine & thought no more of it. Unfortunately he only had £10 in his account and therefore went into a £20 unauthorised overdraft. He had moved house shortly after closing his account, so obviously never changed his address as in his head the account was closed. So then the charges started building up each month, but as he had moved address he was completely unaware of this. On 30th April 2016, the default balance was £362 & was closed.
So when talking to a member of Ulsterbank, my husband asked why he was allowed to withdraw £30, when there was only £10 in the account. His response was, 'as it was over the weekend, our technology wasn't as good back then & only updated on the Monday'. Ulsterbank wont let my husband pay this debt off as it's considered closed.
Is there any way we can dispute this? My husband was left a house by his deceased uncle, it needs an extension as it's too small for our family so we really need a mortgage. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can ask out of goodwill.
But they’re not obliged to remove it as it’s an accurate representation of what happened0 -
Hi,
Most current accounts allow you go a few quid into an unauthorised OD, as a buffer zone, he could easily have checked his balance, at the cash machine, or through online banking, there really is no reasonable excuse you can give, not to have known.
Mind you we all live busy lives these days, and to err is only human, if he writes to the bank, falls on his sword and admits it was his fault, but on this occasion, as a gesture of goodwill, would the bank see fit to remove the default from his credit file.
Tell them the default has caused you to be declined for a mortgage, and, although this is not directly the banks fault, the punishment for what was initially only a £20 debt, is wholly disproportionate in your view.
