Does anyone else pay their car tax using direct debit?

I was tempted to do it this time around for budgeting but annoyed that there's a 5% surcharge for the privilege!

That's why I don't do it. Same as paperless TV licence, they keep asking please go paperless, when I get 5% discount I will

There's no surcharge for a paperless TV Licence. Do you really need to get paid for helping to reduce tree felling?

In answer to the OP: there's no way I would pay 5% more than I have to pay. If I was unable to pay my car tax in one go, I would review whether I could perhaps switch to a smaller car, or may be even get rid of the car altogether and just hire one as and when I need it. This is obviously not an option for people who can't get to work without a car.

Yes, so do I. No surcharge.

Confusion may arise because the only option shown initially is monthly DD which has the surcharge. To pay by annual DD you have to tick the link to 'pay for 6 or 12 months'. You are then presented with two more options of 6 or 12 months. 6 monthly also has the surcharge and costs the same (pro rata) as paying monthly.

If your road tax (sorry, vehicle excise duty since "road tax" hasn't existed since 1937 :p) is low enough you don't get the option to pay in anything other than full.

I pay mine in 1 go but I don't think I get any other option.

As Neil above says its so low I only have 1 choice but to pay it in 1 go.

My VED is £20/year and I switched to a monthly DD of £1.75. Due to Tesco dropping the DD's on their savings a/cs I was searching for others and considered the extra £1 per annum worth it to get another DD. I also switched council tax, water bills and TV licence to monthly payments for the same reason.
