I was tempted to do it this time around for budgeting but annoyed that there's a 5% surcharge for the privilege!

In answer to the OP: there's no way I would pay 5% more than I have to pay. If I was unable to pay my car tax in one go, I would review whether I could perhaps switch to a smaller car, or may be even get rid of the car altogether and just hire one as and when I need it. This is obviously not an option for people who can't get to work without a car.0 -
Your question was Does anyone else pay their road tax by direct debit?
Yes I do, no surcharge0 -
great for the annual payers. enjoy.0

Yes, so do I. No surcharge.
Confusion may arise because the only option shown initially is monthly DD which has the surcharge. To pay by annual DD you have to tick the link to 'pay for 6 or 12 months'. You are then presented with two more options of 6 or 12 months. 6 monthly also has the surcharge and costs the same (pro rata) as paying monthly.0 -
If your road tax (sorry, vehicle excise duty since "road tax" hasn't existed since 1937
) is low enough you don't get the option to pay in anything other than full.

I pay mine in 1 go but I don't think I get any other option.
As Neil above says its so low I only have 1 choice but to pay it in 1 go.0 -

My VED is £20/year and I switched to a monthly DD of £1.75. Due to Tesco dropping the DD's on their savings a/cs I was searching for others and considered the extra £1 per annum worth it to get another DD. I also switched council tax, water bills and TV licence to monthly payments for the same reason.0 -
