NatWest / RBS £175 incentive April 2019

Options
Hi

Not sure if this has been asked before so apologies if it has.

I recently switched my old Barclays account to NatWest to qualify for their latest £175 switching offer, which has now completed. I started this sometime in April and have never had a NatWest account before.

I now see their sister bank RBS is offering the same incentive. Checking the main page on both banks for the switching incentive it says :-

We're sorry but if you've had cashback for switching to NatWest (or Royal Bank of Scotland) since October 2017 you won't be able to get it again.

However, on both banks if you check the full T&C’s it says this :-

You won’t be eligible for this offer if you’ve already taken advantage of a cash offer from NatWest and/or
The Royal Bank of Scotland plc (‘RBS’) between October 2017 and March 2019 for (i) opening a new current account and switching to RBS/NatWest or (ii) upgrading your existing RBS/NatWest current account.

Clearly this states that you are only NOT eligible if you’ve had a cash incentive between Oct 2017 & March 2019.

As I didn’t open my NatWest account until April 2019 and my incentive won’t be paid until August 2019, does this mean I can qualify for the RBS incentive as well if I open an account with them now?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Anyone tried this on previous offers or know if it can be done on both accounts?
  • You can’t do it, no

Can you say why? Is this from experience?

The T&C's clearly state which dates are excluded and my account wasn't opened until a month later?

    Thanks

  • The T&Cs were clearly written prior to the 8 April 2019, so were (in their mind) covering all bases up to the point of the offer.

HOWEVER, there does appear to be a loophole that they have not considered, that being anyone who opens an account April 2019 onwards!

I wonder what the Financial Ombusman's view would be of such a dispute.

That said, there is no obligation for the sister bank to accept an application for a current account from someone who already holds one with the other bank, so that may be the way that THEY would handle it and avoid FOB involvement.

Well i've passed the first hurdle then as I opened a NatWest account in April and completed the switch in April, just opened an RBS account with the switch due to complete this week.

I suppose its a case of completing the qualifying tasks and seeing what happens? :)

    Thanks

Yes, thanks, I was in two minds as I'm not sure if it'd jeopardise the first switch incentive, but I decided to apply in the end.

Poo. I was hoping to open one of each!

I currently have two Tesco bank accounts with £3000 in each, and am looking for new homes for the cash.

The £175 bonus at NatWest select is attractive! However there are no direct debits to switch..does that matter?

    Thanks!

I can’t see how it would jeopardise your first switch. You’ve completed the qualifying criteria on that already. Roll on August to see what happens 👍🏼
