stone cold rad

Hi all

I have one rad that is stone cold. All the other rads work fine, the rad in question is located very close to the rad. it doesnt need bleeding becuase as soon as i do it starts spitting water out. I have attached pics of of the control valves they look a bit dodgy to me..... Also have thought about draining the system but not sure how its not a combi bolier. I have attached pics of the big thing in the bedroom. The boiler is located in the kitchen.

Hope somebody can help.

Thanks

  • Hi

The pin on the trv is stuck

Screw the small plastic nut back down (not too tight as it will shear off) Turn on the c/h, turn off all the other rads, Use a flat blade screwdriver and work the small pin by pushing down on it. The aim is to get it to spring up.
I get physical with them sometimes by hitting the side of the valve.
    Good luck.

    Hi,
You are quite right to be suspicious of the valves, looks like the TRV, (the one on the left), is stuck closed, try gently tapping the pin a few times with the head off. The unit in the bedroom is a hot water tank combined with a cold water storage cistern above and a feed and expansion tank for the heating, I guess you live in a flat?
Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D

    Hi all

    Many thanks for your replies......

    The accomadation is a house.

I did look at the the TRV. I easilty managed to pull of the plastic nut and used a pair of pliers to pull out the pin completely. Should it do that ?

So just to clarfiy the pin should be tinkered with by pushing down until it can pop up ?

not sure it will pop up, if i take the pin out, shoudl i be able to see a spring in there ?

    Hi

    Thank you, yes.
Slightly spoiled by the clutch on the car burning out 5 miles into the journey home, but good service from RAC got us home so not too stressed.
The £525 to get it fixed is another matter.:D

keyboard...Yes the pin does come out, there is a rubber seal down there so take care.
Try the previous advice and see how it goes.

    Hi all

I have smacked the valve about a bit and pressed down on the pin and although i have noticed the pin pop up a bit when presure is applied to it, its still not as much the the other pins on the other rads....

Also i noticed the pipe that the pin is on is much warmer then before so maybe the banging i did a little bit of good but not entirley sure what to do now ? any thoughts

oh i also noticed on one of the rads that was working that its wamr at the top but cooler at the bottom... this makes me think the whole things needs flushing.

    Any ideas guys ?
  • Are any of the plumbing experts around ?

    Hi

Why did you stop? Did you turn off all the other rads and run the system? Keep going until it pops up fully.
Yes it might need flushing if they are cold at the bottom after the system has been working for an hour or so.

    Hi Corgi Guy

The reason i stopped was becuase i had been there an hour or so and wasnt sure after 30 mins if what i was doing much more good. The pin didnt seem to want to spring up any more ?

So i gave up........ are there any other steps that i can take to fix it.

    thanks
