Hi All,
My partner and I are getting married in September and we're looking at Bali as a destination. Has anyone been before who would have any advice on this destination on things to be aware of etc?
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure if you do a search of this board you'll find plenty of threads where Bali forms all or part of the travel.0

Hi Cotta
I went a few years back & spent time in Sanur & Ubud. Watch out for the monkeys if you go to Ubud!
Have a look here https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowForum-g294226-i7220-Bali.html
You'll have a great time!0 -
Ask your questions on the Bali board on Tripadvisor.
There's even a section 'top questions about Bali'.0 -
Depends what kind of holiday you want - surf / water sports, inland yoga retreat, beachfront with beach clubs or beach with older Balinese style? Assuming you don't want an 18-30's type experience I'd steer clear of Kuta (think Magaluf for Aussies)
How long are you going for?
Are you thinking of splitting your holiday between multiple resorts?
Are you planning / wanting to do a stopover en-route (Singapore / Hong Kong?)
Couple of tips we found - limit the amount of cash you take, our hotels basically preferred everything to be charged to our room then settled at the end of the stay. Obviously you will need cash outside the hotel.
Taxis - agree the fare before getting in and do some research as to what is reasonable / expected amount
DO NOT let the 'helpful' men at the airport wheel your bags / cases to your hotel transfer / taxi - they will then demand money and stand with you until your transport arrives trying to get more (and increasing in numbers to try and make you feel uncomfortable)
Take good mosquito / bug repellent - particularly near water / beach or anywhere that has the old style thatched roofs - OH was fine but I on the other hand got bitten to smithereens even with spray (think it was bugs in the thatched roof of our hotel room - not mozzies).
Request mosquito coils (coiled incense sticks) if sitting out at night -these do hope keep mozzies at bay.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

We're also thinking of Bali this year. Very little recent info in the forum so think this thread is helpful
We're looking at three nights Nusa Dua for a relax and bit of luxury, three days Ubud and three days somewhere further North for diving?
Or do people think this is too much moving around for short period of time? We're using to holidays where we move a lot - but wanted something slightly slower paced this year, hence thinking three nights at a time.0 -
I spent a few days in Bali on a trip to Indonesia a few years ago and preferred the next island along - Lombok. Even better than that were the Gili Islands just off the coast of Lombok. There wasn't much to do on the Gilis but a night or two was enjoyable.
Not that there was anything wrong with Bali. I wasn't there for long enough to form a proper opinion and I did travel during the rainy season which made it look a bit scruffy.0 -

As per my previous post, the TA Bali board is busy
I've read posts from people recommending places for diving.
On our first trip to Bali in the mid 1990s, we stayed at the Bali Hyatt in Sanur (recently rebuilt and reopened) and we had a courtesy bus to the Grand Hyatt in Nusa Dua.
We hated every minute of the couple of hours we spent there.
Sanur was more our cup of tea
But we don't like big hotel complexes, we prefer to stay in places where we can walk out and have a choice of lots of places to eat and drink
You can still get luxury hotels in Sanur.0 -

We had a couple of enjoyable weeks in Sanur too, and a week in Ubud, which is an 'explosion' of as many shades of green as you can think of.
Monkey Forest is a bit of an experience. The macaque monkeys are cheeky, and it's best NOT to go around eating, coz they'll want it off you.....and they'll have it
I'd avoid the two main southern resorts of Kuta and Legian though. Far too boisterous, and too many low quality hedonistic types.0
