PPI and Credit Files

Options
Hi all!
In the mid-1990s I moved from rural Norfolk to London aged 21, very wet behind the ears. All the credit I took out back then was packaged with PPI and I didn't know any better - I never questioned it. Several accounts have been completely paid off and paperwork destroyed a long time ago, but I've started PPI queries via the Resolver Service and given all the info I can find.
Needless to say, the lack of paperwork is a big obstacle as I no longer have all the account numbers. I have just tried to obtain full credit reports in the hope they will tell me more, but they no longer seem to go as far back as they did - I'm even unable to add the most relevant previous address.
Does anyone here have any further suggestions to find the old account numbers? I've just had my first rejection due to archived files.
Many thanks

Your credit files go back 6 years.

Anything else will either be in your memory or filing.
  • I guess they're not as exhaustive as they used to be - I had an Experian report previously that went back to the year dot! I was shocked at how much info was kept and how far it went back lol Mind you, it could be another week before I can see what Experian have on me - I have the Equifax and TransUnion ones, but maybe Experian make you wait because they go back further - I can only hope! I have to wait for them to compile files and send me a passkey in the post :(
Well, I guess I can kiss goodbye to several £thousands then :( Hey ho..!

Credit files go back six years, no more. This has always been the case.

Understand that, even if you had documentary proof that you had PPI more than two decades ago, that is just the first hurdle you have to jump. In order to obtain any refund you'd have to show it was somehow mis-sold to you. Also, how do you know you paid £thousands?

What you could do is write Subject Access Request (SAR) letters to all your old lenders, these should return everything kept on file for you how ever far back.

What is this several thousand of pounds of which you speak?
  • No one ever checked I understood what I was paying for - it was the classic "you have to have this to get that" scenario. I had a good job and sick/redundancy benefits too. Country girl let loose in the big city - I know it's £thousands because I know how many accounts I had and used constantly (not all at the same time lol). I grew up, wised up and started refusing PPI, but it took a few years..!
  • I shall look into SARs though - £10 each seems a small price to pay to check, as I really do think if I were to get anything back, I'd end up with a hefty windfall. Nothing ventured, as they say..!

SARs are free and have been for some time now, so don't be sending random lenders £10 cheques...

    That's not a valid mis-sale reason.

Imagine all the refunds Apple would need to give to their iphone customers if that was a mis sale reason...

‘the classic "you have to have this to get that"’ - oh you mean the classic comment almost every complainant, makes but also almost certainly didn’t happen. I’m afraid you will need to come up with much more compelling mis-sale reasons than that.

Sick benefits, if contractual like NHS 6 months full pay yes, in reality you'd need to show your work contract as most people don't realise the firm only pays a minimum then gives you SSP

Redundancy is not a guaranteed benefit or it would be taxable, a firm going under would not pay you lots of money.

Non-advised sales like PPI do not need to do anything more than give you the terms and conditions and you either agree or reject

As above, your credit files are only ever held for 6 years - this is because anything older than that has to be removed, ensuring people get a clean slate eventually

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
