Leaving Virgin

Hi
I am leaving Virgin for Plusnet and was told that I can't leave before the 31 May due to me giving them 30 days notice even though my minimum term expires on 25 May. They are even refunding me by cheque!
Does anyone know if both of these sound right. Many thanks in advance.
