advice on cancelling my sons bank account

Appreciating this is way off topic but the only thing I use of my council is
1. My bins are emptied.
2. The immediate local roads are maintained - but not mine it's unadopted.
Most seems to be spent on adult and social care and as all my relatives are long dead, I'm not married and have no children use none of these.
Police - you having a laf - effectively they do not exist.
So yes apart from roads/fire service I think I would manage quite well without the council at all.
Yes it is off-topic! And very naive. Council Tax pays for a very wide range of services, most of which you so take for granted you don't even realise they are being provided. Planning, transport, highways, police, fire, libraries, leisure and recreation, rubbish collection and disposal, environmental health and trading standards are the usual headline subjects. That's a lot of stuff. All for you, whether you need it today or the future.
Refuse collection is only a small part of what you pay for. If you think there aren't enough police, well, think how bad it would be with absolutely none at all.
As for not needing adult care services, well, wait until you're older, or have a disabling accident, and see how you manage without....
As for roads all your roads (and the infrastructure that goes with them) are maintained by councils (apart from your own unadopted one and Mways/Trunks which are Highways Agency), not just the 'immediate local ones'. And before you say they're all pot-holed, again think how bad they'd be if they were dirt tracks.
I don't think anyone would manage at all well without council services!0 -
No he has no access to online or telephone banking
You can get a 3rd party agreement set up with banks which is just for that bank and not a full power of attorney.
My neice did this when her grandparents were housebound.
You can ask the bank for the forms and your son would obviously need to agree.
It might help with you being able to discuss his affairs on his behalf.
I would get that done and then organise a meeting at the bank so you’re not just talking to the cashiers.0 -
Well, we don't know why he's inside, but I hardly think it could be argued that being convicted of something is an 'unforeseen event'. It is surely a fairly likely event if committing a crime that is punishable by a prison term. He took the risk, and he lost, it's his fault and if he has a debt at the bank that's his responsibility. Going to prison alters nothing.
The Council Tax situation is not relevant. The wonderful (and they are wonderful - I'd like to see you manage without!) services councils provide are perhaps unusable inside prison, but a bank debt is a bank debt, wherever you are and the rules of the bank apply..

Er, yes I did. But my post, that you are quoting, is in reply to post#18. Did you not read that?0 -
With regards to the account being overdrawn and gathering more interest being charged the longer the account is in negative balance for, wouldn't there come a time where eventually the bank will call a default on the account and close it?
