Get him to write the bank a signed letter briefly outlining the facts, perhaps asking the account be frozen until he has the ability to service the debt. Don't forget to include the account details and a return address. No guarantees this will work but it seems the only option left.

*** Sorry, ignore that. I'd missed that line. ***
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

The bank I work for certainly has a department that deals with "custodial accounts", sadly I have no knowledge of what actually happens, but I know they are busy.

I appreciate hindsight is a wonderful thing but just because your son didn't prepare then it doesn't mean it can be written off. He would have known this would have been a possibility so should have got his affairs organised beforehand.

Can you help him by not paying off the debt but at least making payment to the interest each month so when he gets released he just has the original debt to clear.

I would have thought there is a reasonable case to request that interest additions cease while he his detained.
As the OP says he has no way at the moment to pay it off.
If there are any lawyers on here is there a possibility that so being detained by HMG, that the part of the contract which is adding additional interest payments to be made is in legal terms "frustrated" due to the unforeseen events leading to the terms being impossible to comply with?

I understand when you are clink there is no council tax to pay as similarly it is impossible to avail yourself of the (wonderful) services the council provides.

Well, we don't know why he's inside, but I hardly think it could be argued that being convicted of something is an 'unforeseen event'. It is surely a fairly likely event if committing a crime that is punishable by a prison term. He took the risk, and he lost, it's his fault and if he has a debt at the bank that's his responsibility. Going to prison alters nothing.

The Council Tax situation is not relevant. The wonderful (and they are wonderful - I'd like to see you manage without!) services councils provide are perhaps unusable inside prison, but a bank debt is a bank debt, wherever you are and the rules of the bank apply..

Appreciating this is way off topic but the only thing I use of my council is
    1. My bins are emptied.
    2. The immediate local roads are maintained - but not mine it's unadopted.
Most seems to be spent on adult and social care and as all my relatives are long dead, I'm not married and have no children use none of these.
Police - you having a laf - effectively they do not exist.
So yes apart from roads/fire service I think I would manage quite well without the council at all.

A village I frequent in Turkey pays £88 per year and their bins are emptied every day!
