Avoiding BAnk charges Abroad

Hi,
Anybody know any tips for avoiding bank charges when you're abroad ?
I was in the far east recently an wracked up nearly £100 in bank charges-which is what I'd like to avoid the next time I'm out there. I bank with first direct and they offered me another bank card for £15 per month where my bank charges would be halved.
Any tips appreciated.
