Sky fibre query

been with sky broadband for many years. last 4 or 5 years on fibre and was getting around 35mb on laptop (or samsung tablet) connected wirelessly in next room from router (which is a glossy black sky hub).

a few months ago (unrequested) i was upgraded at no extra charge to fibre extra, supposedly higher speeds etc. since then my wireless speed to laptop has dropped to around 25mb. if i hold the laptop near the router this usually increases it to around 30mb. my uploads speed remains a constant of approx 15mb and ping of 7mb.

if i plug the laptop (HP Envy, 2 years old) into the router via ethernet i get around 70mb. is there anything i can do to increase my wireless speeds to anywhere near the wired speed.

i wish they hadn't told me i was being upgraded because at that point i was quite happy with 36mb speed but now i know that wired i can get 70mb i would like to get somewhere nearer towards that.

If you can get the max speed with a ethernet connection, then the issue is not with the fibre connection. It mote likely that the WiFi channel being used by the router if conflicting with another nearby router. Try changing the channel on your router settings.

As above, the change from standard to fast fibre has no bearing on the WiFi speed.

Is it the same router or did they send you a Sky Q router?

Sky routers are notoriously rubbish for wifi speeds. Note wifi, not internet connection speeds. Changing the router to one that will work with Sky (plenty of how to guides on the interwibble) will see the wifi speed improve so you're getting the same speed on wifi as your internet connection actually is. I used a TP-Link one with built in VDSL modem. Sorted all my issues with Sky and wifi speed.

hi colin, it's the same router as i am not on sky Q just 'normal sky +HD'.

i honestly can't see a difference. sometimes streaming may buffer occasionally, but then it could do before also. i just think that if i've been 'upgraded', my speed should not have dropped.

also i can see that via a cable my laptop can get 70mb.

any chance of a link to the router you use please? also is it a case of just unplugging sky router and plugging new one in or is it a case of a complicated install? :eek:

funny thing is my laptop next to the router shows around30mb but my firestick on wireless (which is also next to the router) shows around 45mb on the same wifi?

i am on the default channel 'auto' setting on sky router but i have tried a few different channels but it made no difference at the time. maybe i should try all the channels again in case things have changed?

If your laptop is using the 2.4 GHz band then try channels 1, 6, or 11 only as they don't overlap with any others.

Sky Q Hub is the name of their latest router, nothing to do with the completely separate Sky Q TV boxes/packages.

I'm just on normal Sky TV, but have just upgraded to Fibre so they have sent me the Sky Q Hub.

Interesting thanks. Have you noticed an improvement to your WiFi speeds with this new router?
