A van drove into the back of my car today

Long story short...my car was stationary in a parking spot and a van that was trying to park in front of me reversed into the front door of my car. As soon as I saw his van reversing into my car I didn’t stop beeping and I couldn’t move anywhere as there were other cars surrounding me, but he didn’t stop until he realized his car hit the door. When he got out he was actually wearing headphones hence the reason why he didn’t hear me ‘beeping’. We decided to go down the private route rather than insurance route, so he hopefully sticks by his words. Took a picture of his driving license, except he covered his driving license number? And he gave me his number and I took his license plate number even though it’s a company car. I’m a new driver so I don’t want my insurance to go up, how much do you reckon to fix or replace the door it’s a Nissan micra 1.2 08 plate?

I wouldn't let you take a photo of my driving licence.

So how would I know the person you’re telling me you are is really you? Unless you show me ID. I could give a fake name, address etc.

You still have to inform your insurance company of the incident (it's written in the T&Cs)
The car may get written off.

Doesn’t matter, you can’t insist on ID. If you’re dealing with things properly, registration, name and address should suffice.

You should tell your insurer. You clearly mistrust the other party, are you confident he won’t tell his employer and/or insurer? Because if you keep quiet and your insurer finds out via the third party you could face some trouble.

As for the door, if you decide to fix it yourself, call a scrapyard and get a quote for a new door. Then contact a garage to see how much to fix it.

How does a van drive into your door if he was parking in the space in front of you?

You'd have to risk it. I'm under no obligation to let you take a photo and I wouldn't, point blank no.

Firstly, don't go private, do it all via insurance, which you're probably obliged to do anyway. If its just the door then that's no biggy. How did he get your door if he was parking in front of you?

I don’t really know if I’m explaining my self well or not but basically my car was parked at an angle, and I’m assuming he was going to park or whatever he was going to do I’m not really sure but all I saw was him reversing in to the back of my front door. When I asked him he said he was trying to park in front of me and that I was in the way which didn’t make any sense? Unless he miscalculated the parking space or distance to get into the parking slot between my car and the car in front.

Did you need to park across the road on a bend to take this picture?
