My house has ugly peddledash render on two side starting at the level of the ground floor window ledges and going up. It is blown in places especially round the bay window which I believe is lath behind. I was planning on having it removed and replaced with smooth render (and the lath replaced) but I noticed a house nearby has cladding and it looks quite good.
Which is better - cladding or render and how do they compare price wise?
    Thanks

Cheap cladding! The house I saw had a modern grey wood effect plastic.

I imagined the old stuff would have to go but now I am wondering if that would be the case with cladding. It is only on two sides so not sure how the corners would work.

I know very little about cladding.

Pebbledash is 'ugly' partly or wholly with the benefit of hindsight. Ditto other forms of cladding (meaning any coating or covering).

My apartment block narrowly avoided the developer fitting insulating cladding that is now known to be flammable. A neighbouring block - same developer - has flammable cladding.

Yes, you should take the opportunity to review the current construction of all the walls, cavity filled or empty, sold brick. Tinder frame just under the bay or all over?

Render over lath would suggest stud frame rather than solid brick - There is a possibility that it is indeed brick with a thin timber frame to support the lath & render.

I often wonder how other people get on or what they do after asking for opinions or/and advice. We had all the old pebbledash removed, when the builder started to remove it on the worst bay it literally fell off as it was rotten. The bays (x2) were rebuilt with insulation inside then the old pebbledash was replaced with smooth render which was later painted white. I repaired the inside of the mouldy damp bay and repainted. This was all done in September.
My house looks so much better and the two bedrooms with bay windows have been much warmer through the winter. I am so glad I didn't hide the problem with cladding which I am seeing more and more of locally. The majority of houses in my area have bay windows and many are being covered in cladding to hide the fact they are looking bad. Thank you everyone for your input.
  • Do you have a before and after photo? I'd be interested to know the process and results as it is something I'd consider - pm me if you prefer
  • Would you mind telling me how much rendering cost you? We need to have the side and back of ours done at some point and I’m too afraid to ask!

Sorry I can't find any pictures - I know I have some but don't know where. The house looked really awful and run down prior to the work and now looks good. It was quite messy hacking off the old render but the builders did a great job of clearing up. The whole process took a week. (Removing the scaffolding took a lot longer) We got 3 quotes, one £11,000, one £10,000ish and £8,000ish (some in cash) the one we paid. It was two sides of the house plus repointing one side.
