What's your favorite Caribbean island?

Always wanted to go to Grand Cayman when I was a young lad with all the glitz and money. But perhaps not now I am a bit older.

Knowing what you know now, if you had the choice to go to one Caribbean island what would it be?

Nor did I. They are all pretty similar tbh.

Caymans would be my first choice! Love the pictures and stories that my friends tell me about their vacations. Hoping to make it there soon though myself.

    The ABC islands
The ABC islands are the three western-most islands of the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea that lie north of Falc!n State, Venezuela. In order alphabetically they are Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. All three islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, although they remain outside the European Union.

Surprised people think they are all the same, they are actually very different.

We've been to a few and have a house on one. Oddly, the one where our house is, isn't my favourite.

My favourite is Grenada. It's not too big, the people are wonderful (a theme that does run through all of the islands but somehow they are even better here) and the history is very recent. For most of us of a certain age, the history is within our generation and the island evidences it in parts here and there.

IMHO it has one of the most amazing beaches in the Caribbean.

Indeed. Remember that Cuba is also a Caribbean island (although people sometimes forget that it is nearly a thousand miles long), and is obviously very different from somewhere like Grenada.

What is true is that they all have AI resorts, all of which offer a somewhat similar experience. And if you stay in your resort the whole time (perhaps because going outside is not safe) then you are not going to notice much difference.

    Been to Cuba.
It was the worst holiday we've ever had.

Never wanted to go to Jamaica, Barbados, et al.
    Don't like All Inclusive.

    I prefer going East.

My simple advice is to avoid the Cruise Port Towns in the Eastern Caribbean, and probably the same advice all over the Caribbean Region.

    Tastes differ.

I love Cambodia and enjoy Thailand and Malaysia, but Cuba was just about my best ever holiday.

Having said that, Southeast Asia has the best food I have ever tasted, while Cuban food was far from exciting.

    When did you visit?
We went to Cuba back in 1997, when it was very new as a destination country in holiday brochures.
We stayed in Holguin which was a very new destination - unlike Varadero.
The AI food wasn't that great but there was nowhere outside of the hotel to go to eat.
    Nothing in the shops.

We found the food bland, boringly bland, which from what you say may be the norm.
Good local cuisine is a very big part of our holiday.

    We liked Havana.
