Nigelbb, i thought i made it pretty clear, i used the £180 of energy. the 500 is the initial refund that they want back (which was NOT energy i used)!

It sounds like it IS energy that you used but that EDF billed you incorrectly initially then sent a corrected bill. If you had been taking meter readings all this should have been obvious to you.

The offer of £50 compensation for messing you about is just what the Ombudsman would have ordered so I don't think that you will do any better.

i don't think you are understanding
i had been sending meter readings throughout actually , the new company i signed up for would have sent EDF the final reading as is standard but EDF decided to pull the trigger and take out the final amount on an estimate (a ridiculous 700) which i made them refund asap as was clearly wrong
they then revised the bill saying i did't owe them anything but they owed me £500 which went into my account which then revised AGAIN 2 weeks later saying that was wrong and that the final bill was actually me owing them 180 meaning i owed them the 180 of power i used plus the 500 they mistakenly sent me . i.e they want 700 pounds or so back.
i personally think £50 is insulting for the stress, hassle and inconvenience they have caused me. i havn't really quantified how many angry calls there have been, having to call my bank to get an indemnity to get the initial 700 back etc.
Anyway i will keep playing hardball for now

You asked in your original post what your legal obligations are. Simples ,if you owe the money then you have to pay EDF!!
It isn't as if you can claim no billing for years.

What do you think you should get for inconvenience?? If you think that £50 is insufficient ,then you need to approach EDF with your realistic valuation of your time wasted etc BUT don't expect them to drop the whole bill -maybe a slightly bigger comp. payment and time to pay.

I believe EDF annoying refund you money in January, if you are over £50 in credit.

It is bonkers, because they usually need the money back!

If they are going to do refunds, it should be when M Lewis suggested. Middle of summer? but maybe that doesn't suit the company finances.

P.S I doubt they took money out of your bank without warning. They emailed my final bill link, and even sent it thru the post dispute having an online account, (many weeks before it is due to come out the bank)

I wish someone would give me a £500 interest-free loan and pay me £50 for the privilege.

You owe them the money, so you've got to pay them £680, on which they're giving you a £50 discount. Other than sending you flowers, all they can do is give you a bigger discount. So what do you expect them to do?

i never asked for a 500 interest fee loan though and we spent it thinking it was an unexpected windfall and was not factored into our budget, we have been misled by their clear ineptness, i mean how hard is it to get a bill correct.
i want them to take a sizeable hit, not just for my benefit but so they realise they cannot just treat customers like this without consequence. i have suggested that the person who handled the case after the initial wrong bill and then guaranteed that the £500 credit was 100%correct have it taken out of his wages, we shall see how that goes down

It all boils down to how much compensation you can get from the company.

Over the years there have been scores, if not hundreds, of cases reported on this forum where the customer has been treated a lot worse than yourself, and over a longer period.

I stand to be corrected but I am not aware of anyone getting more than £100 compensation where the customer has not suffered financial loss; and that includes the long winded process of a formal complaint to the Ombudsman.

Tell them you are on benefits and offer them £3.60 per week.

!!!!!! take some responsibility yourself. You should have known from your own meter readings that the bill was wrong.

From what I understand, they incorrectly billed you £750 but refunded you. They then say you're incorrectly in credit by £500 and paid you, but they now want it back but you spent it.

They offered £50 compo but it's not enough for you. Im assuming you want enough compo from them to cover the 500 you spent that wasn't yours?

I'm sorry, but if all that is correct, then you have no leg to stand on. Take the £50 they offered and pay them back in installments.

I hate energy companies as much as the next person, but in this case, I believe you're the one in the wrong
