Unless he is executor he can’t claim.

The new will was all signed. Would I have to contact the new solicitors? Also I know it sounds terrible but making the arrangements will be very expensive for me as a lot of travel on top of the usual expenses will have to be made. Should I just try to keep receipts?

I’m not sure how making arrangements for a funeral would incur so much in the way of travel costs, nor other costs outside of minimal travel either.

As I recall, I saw the FD once, otherwise the arrangements were made via the phone or emails.

Payment for the funeral was done directly from the deceased’s bank account, and other funerary expenses of flowers and tea reclaimed later.

Yes, keep all estate related receipts. But there is a limit to ‘personal’ expenses that can be claimed.

As things stand, you would be wise to make the phone call to the solicitors that hold the new will before you do anything further and find out you are not the executor. Equally, these solicitors may have no idea that your aunt has died (why would they?) or how to contact you anyway should you not be the executor.

If you know it was signed because you've actually seen it, are you still named as executor?

Thank you for all the help. I just thought it would fall to me to organise everything but I'm glad I took your advice here because she has appointed two new people to sort out her affairs in her new will.

I hope you are not personally distressed by being 'bumped' from the Executor role, as well as the usual grief & I hope the replacements have the grace to treat you with the proper consideration.

I was a bit taken aback by not being the executor any more. I'm grateful in a way that I don't have to do anything. Just wish my Aunt had thought to tell me and avoid confusion. Just a learning process really and to make sure I let the people I want to carry out my wishes what's going on.
