NYC is generally a very safe City. If you haven’t been to the US before it can be a bit intimidating at night with the homeless much more visible than here but keep to yourself and don’t give them money and you’ll be fine (giving change can make things worse as they might start wanting more and more).

I completely agree,me and my wife used to walk around NY at 2.00am and felt safer than at home,use your head and keep to the main roads which are well lit.0 -
I'm late here but would give another shout for a big apple greeter. I just found out about them too late.
I'd also recommend a day trip to Washington; you can get ones that start about 7AM, take 4 hours to get there, you see the main sights (Smithsonian Museum, memorials and monuments, White House), before taking you back.
We were in Hell's Kitchen so try the gotham food markets for good grub.
The underground and bus service isn't as highly developed as, say, London.
There are folk museums where you can find out how people really lived there.
There are Santander banks everywhere and Three phones roamed well for us.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
