New York on a budget

I've wanted to go to New York for years, and am finally going to do it this summer. I'm single, so am finding accomodation to be expensive because I obviously have to pay for the whole room myself (and exchange rate isn't great at the moment).
I've put spending on myself on the backburner for quite a long time so it feels a bit extravagant, but while I'm young and able to go, I'd like to. I work and save hard afterall.
I wondered if anyone here had any experience of New York and don't do's and any do's. Any ideas for days out on a budget? etc.
Thank you.

Do not fall into the trap of staying in an AIRB&B in NY as they are illegal and more often than not ripping people off,as others have said sit down and read the long thread on NY and take insperation from there.
Also there are lots of free things to do and see in NY so take advantage of them.0 -
You could go to our New York instead:
And make it a cheap 2-centre trip by taking the bus from Boston..!0 -

My DD loves New York and stays at the Pod 51 regularly.

It's a brilliant location and has plenty of delis for hot or cold cheap meals close by.
She always takes the bus from the airport and the hotel is about the same distance/time from either JFK or Newark which often has better flight deals.0 -
The Staten Island ferry is free and gives a good view of the Statue of Liberty.0

do you know that you can explore a lot by using their water taxis? They are very cheap and it is so nice to be on a boat in the very hot NY summer. And they have lots of free ferries that goes right near Staten Island. So you can save some time and money.0

Don’t rule out hostels. You can get rooms with only a few people in (which might be part empty depending when your going). Plus they often have single rooms.:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one
