Try different browsers as a start. There's one commercial organization i use who when you use a non supported browser just feed back carp results and it only works properly on one browser (of the handful i use)
You could also try the usual such as deleting all cookies and certificates relating to the govt gateway website.

I've just used Opera instead of Chrome and I've managed to login.... Thanks for the help. It's still shabby though :D

Also worth clearing the cache, once you've had an error, as browsers prefer to load the last set of pages from storage rather than getting everything fresh each time (Jarvis used to be bad this way if they updated something on the webpage)
  • This morning l could not log in to gov gateway using iPad! Then I tried on smartphone and it worked! I checked my self assessment and then the site closed! I tried to log in again using same ID / password but it failed saying wrong ID or password! Then all my attempts at getting through failed

Have you tried the HMRC app on the iPad. It’s excellent!

I have not completed a self assessment tax return for over 15 years but it still has all my history.
