Temporary modified car insurance
My car is currently parked off road and all I want to do is drive it to get an MOT and back. However:
1. It's modified - only alloy wheels and a couple of body mods. Nothing that affects performance
2. It's old and not very valuable. Probably £1000 at most.
edit: 3. It's currently SORN and I can't get tax without an MOT
Is there anything I can get which isn't going to cost me hundreds of quid?? This is driving me crazy...
edit: Just for clarity, the standard/go to temp cover companies only cover unmodified cars, with a value of over £1500 and to not be declared SORN.

Ask around and find someone who has trade plates who could take it for its MOT? The MOT place may know someone?0

You can drive a vehicle on SORN only if it's to and from a pre-booked MOT. As far as insurance is concerned google day insurance. My car is currently parked off road and all I want to do is drive it to get an MOT and back. However:

All day insurance companies that I've found require an MOT, car not to be SORN, car not modified and most of them need the car to be valued over £1500. Think they must all have the same underwriters or something like that. Have been googling for hours now0 -
You can drive a SORNd car to an MOT - but it must be insured.
There's no point in taxing it without insurance in place - you can tax it, but you'll be committing an offence, since all taxed cars must be insured. So, unless you want to tax it, why bother testing it? Just for sale? But you're going to want putative buyers to test-drive it, right?
Probably the cheapest and easiest way is to take out a full-year policy. Then, within the 14-day cooling off period, cancel it. Bingo, 14 days of insurance for the pro-rata price of an annual policy. Remember, though, that any charges on top of the premium - "policy admin", anything relating to setting up finance, etc etc - don't get pro-rata refunded.0 -

I thought it was possible to tax it without insurance if it's not being kept on the road? I am looking to sell it. Bipolar and eBay are a bad mix lol. Will definitely look into that insurance idea though. Thanks

It's possible to tax it without insurance. Insurance isn't checked when tax is bought, and hasn't been since 2012.I thought it was possible to tax it without insurance if it's not being kept on the road?
It's just not legal to have it uninsured but taxed - and hasn't been since continuous insurance was brought in in 2011.
If it's not on the road, there's no need to tax it.0 -
How far is it to the MOT place? Might be cheaper to get it transported on the back of a lorry or on a trailer than paying for insurance plus cancellation charges.0

Quick thought, do you have a policy on another vehicle (in your name etc).
They may provide you with temp cover for another vehicle.
Aviva have done this for me in the past, although admittedly the car they temp insured wasn't modified.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
Why not see if the closest MOT station can collect ?0
