Halifax aren’t allowed to withhold these rights from you. When Halifax entered into contracts with Visa and Mastercard, they agreed to confer the standard Visa or Mastercard cardholder rights on any customer they issue with a card. What’s most annoying is that, if you’re successfully refunded your £49.99, Halifax won’t be out of pocket by that amount. The only cost to them is in the administration time.

Actually pressing home your rights can be a bit tricky. Visa and Mastercard don’t accept correspondence from members of the general public. You could follow the procedure on Halifax’s How To Complain page. Make any complaint in writing only, and head your letter with the single word “complaint”. Then, maybe, look at a better credit card provider. :)

The days of thinking that PayPal is some strange Internet oddity are long gone. Just look at who accepts PayPal.

No, there’s no limit. When people think about limits and credit cards, they’re thinking about the Consumer Credit Act. That’s UK-specific legislation. It’s in addition to anything you get from Visa or Mastercard.

I’ve had a transaction for £14 charged back to me by Nationwide. Admittedly, that was a long time ago, before PayPal would adjudicate on “not as described” disputes. I actually liked being able to charge back, because when you won, you knew that not only would the horrible eBay seller lose the amount you’d paid, but PayPal would also hit the seller with a £14 chargeback processing fee.

You have to remember that PayPal is now a fully-fledged Luxembourg bank. The idea of trying to argue that PayPal is some third party between the seller and the banking system is now also out-of-date.

Unless I am completely out of date there is a difference between the way paypal and nochex work and it used to be that paying by nochex was not covered by credit card agreements. It was something to do about nochex actually processing the money themselves and then nochex paid the seller, whereas paypal just pay the money direct to the seller. It is always worth persuing a dispute with the credit card company though as their initial reaction always appears to be to say 'not covered' regardless.
